Default New Oil Pump

I am about to do a cam swap in my LS1 and I am just wondering if you all would or would not replace the factory oil pump. It only has 63000 miles on it and I have never had any issues or worries. I know many are going to say "if you are in there, why not?" but I am on a tight budget and don't want to spend money extra money on something I don't need as of right now. Thanks!

Some of the earlier LS1's had oil pump issues. Based on that, I think while apart I would personally change it out with a new pump.

And it would benefit you to change the timing chain, which requires removing the pump anyway.

What oil psi does car make now? I just did cam swap, & I didn't bother w/oil pump or timing chain... granted the motor has 30k on it. Buy why spend more if not truly needed

Well the wire on the oil sending unit came out when I swapped the fast intake on but before hand it was never below probably 45psi when it was warm even after some pulls. When cold, it was closer to 60.

Are you comfortable replacing the oil pump without pinching the o-ring? Do you know how to center the pump when you reinstall it? It's not really that hard, but people do screw up here and even drop the oil pump to pickup bolt into the pan. It's kind of ironic how some people will create problems in order to avoid a problem that was never there.

You could remove just the pump cover, pull the gears, and have a look at everything without unbolting the pump form the engine and pick up.

Not a bad idea to replace it, but like others have mentioned if you aren't having issues now and are not completely confident doing the job yourself you might want to just leave it alone.

Thank you,

Does the pan HAVE TO BE completely dropped down in order to replace just the pump and o-ring??
