Default LS3 in a C5 Z06

Ok i'm sure most of you are familiar with my situation.
I found out monday the engine has a small crack in the bottom of the cylinder wall behind the sleve in one of the cylinders. So now I have to start all over from block up.
Heas were checked out and everything is fine with the heads.
I was going to just build a 383 out of my LS6 but now i'm contimplating a LS3.
But what is involved in the swap?
I called jegs and the guy tried to argue with me that I would have to change my pedal assembly because the LS3 has a drive by wire TB and the LS6 in my Z06 is cable driven. That conversation didn't last long.
He also said I would need a $1200 LS controller kit.
So $6400 for the engine and another $1200 controller?
I called Summit and talked to them about building an engine up from a bare block with a 383 stroker kit.
The guy told me he didn't have time to take my $7,000 order
So that conversation didn't last long either.
So where do I go from here?
I don't want to spend $6,000 for a used engine.
When could build a new engine from the block up for @ $7000
But would I be better off using an LS3 and changing the LS3 intake for the LS6 intake? from what I understand they both share the same heads.
And would I really need the $1200 controller kit?
I know some people here have put the LS3 engine in a C5 Z06.
Please let me hear from you I would like to know what all is involved.
Thanks, Joe

You don't need a $1200 controller kit. The crank reluctor is different in an ls3 so you have to have the conversion box which is like $250 and then you have to get some wiring extensions and of course the ls3 intake, injectors, and fuel rail. May be a few other small things you need but thats the main things. Other then that it's pretty straight forward. If it wasn't a corvette I would tell you to get a 408 iron block, but you probably don't want that extra weight on the front of a vette. I still would look at a Built TMS alum motor before I would look into ls3 crates. You get more for you $ IMO. And with buying a motor from Thompson motorsports you could get the 24x reluctor and all so you don't have to pay for conversion parts. Just drop it in and go!

here is an 6.2 alum long block for a great price!

Not to mention it has forged internals so it can handle a ton more power and you can go with a bigger cam for even more power!

I bought a forged 5.7 from them about 3 years ago and it's still running strong in a buddy's procharged f-body on about 10lbs of boost. I will be getting a 408 from them next month when I get the funds...

If you're going to build the motor then get a 24x crank and you want need the control box. You don't need anything but cam sensor extension harness and knock sensor extension harness unless you use the LS6 valley plate. You will need an LS6 to LS2 TB harness and a few other odds and ends (injector rail and injectors) but thats it.

I called TMS and talked to them about building me a LS6 383 stroker.
The engine fully blue printed, balanced and forged rotating assembly. was @ $4400
Add @ $750 for upgraded Cam kit with timing chain and HV oil pump.
And $125 LS7 hydralic roller lifters. And @ $100 for push rods.
Initial Quote was $5375 plus frieght and.
I put my LS6 heads, oil pan and intake and other bolt on's on it.
What are your thoughts on this?
thanks, Joe

That's not bad at all for what you're getting there. So you'd be putting your current LS6 heads on this build, and if so are they stock heads or no?

The heads will be ported and polished and they have roller rockers and double springs. but the valves I believe are stock.

What size injectors should I go with and is the stock TB good enough or should I go with a bigger TB as well? The car had Long tube headers on it.

Sounds like a solid setup for a great price. Also with the forged internals if you ever decide you want more power you go throw nitrous or boost at it!

I have an LS3 block in my Z06.

If you have a block built, have them put in a 24 tooth reluctor wheel on the crank. Use an LS2 chain, valley cover. You'll need a cam sensor reloc harness extension, knock sensor relocation extensions, TB conversion harness (drive by cable or wire??). As far as the intake, depends on the heads. You can get new injectors to work w/your current injector harness/intake-rail/combo, cut them off and put the right ones on, or I think there are adapters, lots of choices there for injectors. I would just buy the right injector for your intake and connectors.

416 BY FAR the best LS I've ever owned! Had mine in the car since 2009.

$7k? I'm going to say, not happening with the better aftermarket heads. Maybe stock LS3 and LS3 intake.
