Rods most certainly Do have a specific way they go in. Look at the side of the rod, one side is straight and one side is beveled. The beveled side goes toward the crankshaft, the straight side goes toward the rod its sitting next to. If you don't put them in like this they will spin the bearings. Don't be shy about calling your local machine shop with questions like this. Questions are free and most guys will give you good advice trying to earn your business.

If it's the stock crank, then it doesn't matter. The crank journals don't have a radius like aftermarket cranks do, so there won't be any clearance issues with the bearings. If it were an aftermarket crank with the radius on the journals, then yes, you can have issues.

The LS rods are also on center, so that won't be an issue either.

If the OP has a 1999 Camaro, then this is the direction of the connecting rods.

How does that matter? What difference does it make which way they go?

Yes the car is a 99 stock crank and rods. Here is where we ran into the problem I had 1 machine shop balance them but they could not put the new pistons on the rods so had to go to a different machine shop and he tried to look up which way the rods went on the pistons and could not find an answer so he put them on this way and said if they need changed he would do it for free.so I put two of them in and here we are lol I have been looking online and can't find an answer

I would totally put them in the way they came out, flats facing frontwards is the way they came from the factory..

But i just talked to someone last night and he ran his 5.3 like you have your rods and he said he has had no problems... this was from what i understand on a engine that has been running about a year or so now.. you can find him on youtube under MrWhitels1 if you want to chat him..

I do know though by putting two rods together with one flat facing frontwards and the other flat facing rearward, caused the ones i used to test with, to catch on the mating surface ever so slightly.. there may be a bit of magnetic metal in your first old change.. if you do decide to run them the way they are..

as already mentioned the flats face the front of the engine. this is in the gm service manual and they point this out with a picture as well... I would install them per the service manual.

Yeah i enjoy watching some of his videos, as i watched one of them, i saw he had put the rods in with one side the wrong way, like the rods in your picture, and since i was very interested in knowing how this turned out, i messaged him, asking if the engine was still running and whatnot, he replied, then i asked if there was metal in his first oil change, but he hasn't replied to my second message yet, after the first time, when i found out he did run it this way anyways, and said its been running like that, again im not so sure if its still running or if he even still has the engine, but yeah if i understand correctly its been running about a year, im waiting for a reply though whether if he still has the engine and so on...
