Default Mixing brands??

Good day!

Just installed my baby cam in my 98 ls1 T/A, went with a 216/220 Comp Cams, Next step is obviously valve springs, i'm thinking push rods and rockers as well. So i originally was going to go with comp cams Part number:26915CS-KIT, suggested from summit. After ordering some parts off of Tick Performance, i saw they had Brian Tooley racing valve springs for almost $100 less than Summit wanted for the comp Cams. Just wondering if i'm missing something by going with the BTR valve springs?? saving $100 is saving $100... Thanks!

Another vote for BTR and different brands will be fine, as long as you use the correct springs that cam needs.

Thanks! this is my first hands on with cams and pushrods and valve springs and what not, so don't mind me if I ask stupid question. So here are the specs on my cam; 216/220 114 LSA. Intake lift with Factory rocker 0.525 in, Exhaust valve lift with factory rocker 0.532 in. Summit techs suggested the comp cams valve spring with specs of ; outside diameter of outer spring 1.290 in, spring rate 313 lbs/in, inside diameter of outer spring 0.650 in. the BTR springs are; outside diameter 1.290, inside spring ID 0.694, install load- 157, open load-400 lift max-0.625... so looking at these, there are differences, I'm just not sure what it translates to in 3rd grade level terms... also, I know that these threads have said that with a cam you should do valve springs, pushrods and either trunions or different rockers. My pushrods measure 7 3/8", I think that's 7.4?? as far as the rockers, I see a million different ratios. This car is not a huge build, just the cam inside, everything else is bolt ons, headers, ORY, wires, plugs, SLP induction, SLP lid, and tick performance rebuilt t-56 with viper 2nd. I'd love to do a FAST 102MM intake and throttle body, MSD coils and different gears, but at this point, I'd love to just get everything back together so I can drive it this summer! Any input would be great, thanks!!

you do NOT need double springs for that cam. Either PAC or comp beehives will work. You can reuse your retainers/locks.

Yeah, that's a pretty tame cam. I'd go with a 224r cam if I were you, it'll have the same driveability and have decent power all around. Me personally would go bigger, but since you're wanting it close to stock it seems.

You could use LS6 springs with that camshaft if you wanted to, but a PAC 1218 would be the best choice IMO.

The 1218 can use factory retainers, or if you want to shave some weight off the valve train I offer a Ti retainer for the 1218's. The 1218 can also use the factory style one piece valve stem seal/locator as well which I also sell and will need to be replaced.

I would also recommend a trunion upgrade as well and I offer a really nice bushing trunion kit that has been making the rounds here on Tech lately.

If I can be of any help please give me a call or email me at the address in my signature.

The spring listed originally was a beehive spring. The BTR kit is a dual spring kit.

Perhaps Comp has the same spring somewhere in their lineup. I don't really care. You pay for the Comp name for no reason. The BTR kit is better priced and comes with better retainers for the money.

But I will concede that there aren't many spring manufacturers out there. Lunati also offers the same kit at the same price as BTR. But the BTR kit is well proven.
