Default Checking p2v WITHOUT a headgasket?

So if you were building an engine that you were very confident about clearance and you didn't want to "waste" a head gasket to measure clearances, what would stop you from setting up without a head gasket in and adding the gasket thickness to your clearance numbers?

I have adjustable pushrods and locked up lifters, so it wouldn't be a problem with preloading the valves.

Done it plenty of time with Gen 1 small blocks, don't see why it won't work with LS. Just have to keep in mind the gasket thickness is added at 90 degrees to the piston angle not the valve angle.

Got it. So mind the geometry and I'm golden.

Due to the valve angles, it's not as simple as adding the gasket thickness to your clearance measurement.

An alternative that can yield accurate results would be to purchase shims from McMaster-Carr or the like that will equal the compressed thickness of the head gasket. You'd likely need to purchase a few different thicknesses and then stack them to match the gasket thickness.

Go to Lowes and get a piece of 0.050" aluminum sheet, or just buy a single cheap HG from Advance...

Use your old gasket assuming original is still available. Otherwise use shims. Don't attempt this without a gasket, pistons come out of the hole about 0.006" and without a gasket will contact the head.

I seen on horsepower tv they used feeler gauges with the thickness of the gasket they were using to check ptv.

I used precision washers from McMasterCarr.com to replicate my head gasket thickness.
