AFR/TFS/and two local sources handle most of my CNC porting Jimbo to answer your question in the previous post

That's as much as Im willing to share!

I've always wondered this, and maybe you can answer this questions; I see some CNC'd chambers that look like yours (completely CNC's with no area left untouched). I've also seen heads that have had the chambers CNC ported, but the entire chamber is not ported, as there are areas left untouched. Could you elaborate on why that is, and is one way better than the other?
Still curious about this.

CNC'ing stock heads almost always leaves voids.....of should I say its very popular cause your trying to accurately machine a moving target (the actual as cast surface which is never in the same spot twice).

A clean sheet head like an AFR casting or a TFS casting that is designed in advance to be always CNC machined comes with extra material purposely cast in from the factory so the CNC leaves the final shape as it was intended with no or minimal voids helping performance, or helping to keep the original performance/flow characteristics consistent.

Some stock heads that are ported have pretty large voids and that's not good for performance.....the casting was missing material where the CNC was suppose to cut and the shape of the port (or chamber) is clearly not how it was originally intended and digitized and performance will likely suffer.

Hoping that answers your question.....sorry I missed it.....just been crazy busy of late.

Regards,
Tony

Thanks Tony. Reason I ask is because the heads I run (Advanced Induction Dart/RHS CNC'd heads) have areas that were left untouched by the CNC machine. There were also areas in the intake and exhaust ports like that as well.

Wonder how these will work on a boosted 5.3 engine over ported 243s....

Wondering if these would be a good fit on an 01 gmc awd truck with the LQ4 6.0? Looking to bump up the cr to 10.5, good set of heads and a small cam to get that 6.0 up to 425hp or so with good manners. No max effort here, just a good driver with decent mph. Sounds like these might be the ticket?

Tony, what cam would you suggest for something like this and stall convertor on the stock 4l65 trans? Just wanting a snappy DD with good driving manners and decent mpg's. Thanks!

Perfect choice really....cant beat the value these offer for the money. Its a highly detailed piece at a very affordable price.

Regarding cam, converter and other issues more directly related to your personal project lets take it to email or phone

Email is mamomotorsports@yahoo.com

Phone is (661)714-1317

We can discuss the heads in more detail as well as the rest of the combination but highlights of what you already laid out is solid (bump in CR, conservative cam for more low speed grunt etc.)

Regards,
Tony

Tony, is 3.9 the minimum on these? Or could these work on a 5.3?

You need a really small valve head to be effective on the 4.8/5.3 small bore platform.

Look for another new product announcement of my MMS 205 full CNC heads that I designed specifically for the smaller LS engines (specifically the small bore engines)

This head has a 1.975 intake and a 1.57 exhaust valve and flows right at 300 or so (Im advertising 298....some ports will go 300 CFM but 298 is more the average and a more honest figure). That's alot of air thru an intake valve that's approaching a BBC exhaust valve in size....LOL

I will be posting pics and flow figures soon....

Tony,

How would you compare your new MMS 205's to your, still, killer AFR Mongoose 205's? Reason I ask is there are still lot's and lot's of people out there running your head/cam packages making 450+ to the rear tires! And that's from the early 2000's...I'm just curious.

Regards,

Trent

Good question.....lets just say that getting 296-298 CFM's thru a 205 cc port was very challenging back in the day! (I accomplished that over a decade ago).

It was even more challenging getting essentially the same flow thru the same size port with only a 1.975 valve!!

The coefficient of discharge on the new MMS 205 small bore head is insane.....crazy airspeed crossing the valvejob on this new design that's clearly even more efficient than the old 205 design and as you already attested; always performed extremely well holding its own even by today's standards (my newest stuff not withstanding but both my new products have larger ports in the 220 cc range and flow a good bit more accordingly).

The key with the new design aimed at the small bore engines from its inception was to get big air thru smaller ports that had much smaller valves so the product actually worked on the 4.8 / 5.3 liter platform with the diminutive 3.780 bore (without completely shrouding a 2" or larger valve).

The new small bore 205 is going to work really well.....the only bummer is I couldn't do it as cost effectively as I would have liked. Both valves are custom and cost more and the porting program takes forever to run because its so much smaller in some areas the tool paths of the CNC had to be adjusted and accounted for so the tool wouldn't shank.....bottom line the porting program takes more time on the CNC than a much larger 220 or 235 head and I pay AFR based on machine time.

I haven't even settled on a final cost but at a minimum it will be the same price of my fully ported MMS 235's (base price $2650). But, as always you get what you pay for and I think some of these better 5.3 liter builds with my new heads will be putting down power numbers some 346 builds might be envious of (factoring in the driveline losses in question).

Look for my official Product release thread soon with more details!

-Tony

While understanding there are other variables involved, what would be a good estimate in power these make over a well CNC ported 243 (AI, etc)?

I'm looking at the AI 226 CNC program and if these are really only say 10-15whp more, I need to decide if they're worth the almost $1k extra in cost..

How much do the lighter valves run?

Hi Tony long time no talk. What dual valve springs do you recommend for the AFR205's? I'm one of those guys from yrs ago and still run my AFR205's. They pack a nice wallop. I put down 453RWHP and 420RWTQ with a 228-232 .600 lift cam with 4:10 gears yrs ago.
Thanks Pat
