Tiny cam in a big motor is a nice daily driver combo if you have the cash, but I like a little lope

My personal choice?...I'd go with the Hughes built 4L80E. They rebuilt my second 4L60E and gave me a 1 year warranty with it. I've had no problems since (rapidly approaching the one year mark now). I'll be honest, I'm kind of jaded since I live in Phoenix...where they're located. If I have problems I don't have to go far.

Good luck with the car. I've gone through allot of crap with my car too (5 figures $), but at the end of the day it's just too much fun to get rid of.

Does it shift automatically like a factory tranny, or do I have to shift it?

What kind of difference will I notice during everyday normal driving?

Thanks, seriously considering it. Is $1,500 a good deal for one?

Congrats pealtothemetal on the fit and feel of your cam. Don't sweat the cold start, if you call any Cali start a cold start. My MTI 422 runs the R1 cam 232 237 .560 .560 114lsa and its the same here where cold means cold. It's that first 30-60 seconds to warm things up in the snow and then she'll idle like a top with just enough lope to let you know something just isn't quite stock with this picture.

For those who question what the limit of street torque is... imagine your car coasting at idle going down the freeway as it rolls up to the 10 mph mark and have the smack of your 1-2 shift break the tires loose and set you sliding. Welcome to a 3" snowfall for Monday morning comuter traffic.

Quickin, what converter have you been running so far in the FLP Lvl 4? Was the converter built to spec for the your new engine or is was it an old stock torque level prepped converter that you had before the new engine?

The reason I ask is that I'm still running my SY-3500 in my FLP Lvl 4 and not having any unexcpected problems. I knew going in that the 422's torque was going to push the converter up 300-400 RPMs and that's probably about where it stalls these days.

2001WS6:

MTI is currently putting together my 427 LQ4 for my 98 C5 A4 with FLP Level IV tranny. I will be running the radical S1 cam.

As you are running a similar set up to what i will have, do you mind sharing your dyno numbers and 1/4 mile ets and trap speeds. Your car sounds awesome man! You can't beat the alum. block MTI 422 in my opinion! I would have gone that route but just live too far to be worrying about trailoring the car back to MTI if i was unfortunate with a sleeve dropping, etc.

Thanks and Best of luck with that awesome 422!

They checked all the line pressures in the tranny and they all seem to be perfect. It's coming out tomorrow and being sent to Yank for inspection.
I hope like hell it's a bad verter.

MTI 427 C5 Roadster:

Your going to love your new motor.

We made an inital run on the Mustang Dyno that was in the neighborhood of 400 HP through the 12-bolt with 3.73s, the SY-3500/FLP Lvl 4, stock injectors and stock fuel pump. The Dyno's hardrive took a dump that night so we ended up doing the tune with the wideband, LS1-Edit and ATAP the old fashioned way... they made runs on I-75 at night.

Things felt plenty fine for Daily driving so we didn't play with the pump and injectors at that point and I didn't bother getting another dyno run. The main reason being that I got to put the hurt to a few local Vipers the night I drove home from the shop. It's one of the fun things about living down the street from DCX's HQ. I figured that was as good as a dyno slip any day.

Being a cageless wonder (need the room for the two car seats for the kids) that only runs at club events, I've yet to really put a full end to end run on the car at the track. The best run on Nittos was a 1.709 60', for 11.75 at 119.5 and plenty of spinning down the track. That scored a warning but it was still a fun day.

So I figured it would be fun to see if I could get a wheels up shot with stock front wheels. I picked up some 8.5" Convo Pros and a set of 26x10x15 MT Drag slicks for the back to start learning how to launch. Needless to say that with stock torque arm, stock shocks and no real weight reduction is proving to make it tough. I'd get some nice deep squatting photos but no air on the front wheels yet. My 60's are in the 1.55-1.59 range now though, but I didn't bother to run anything faster than a 11.75 to keep the tracks happy.

So I'm pretty comfortable that low 11's are there once I breakdown and put in the cage with a real TA and some shocks.

Quickin,

Why a Yank 3000? Not ment to be a question to put you on the spot but I'm just curious.

Did you talk to the crew at Yank about your choice or was it just an adverse reation to high stall/noise (which is an Ok thing)?

The SY-3500 tuned for the torque is really easy on the tires and lets you roll into power easy. I'm seriously considering the new Super Stock 3800 to put some more heat on the slicks and yet be managable on the street.

Living in FL, you should be able to run Nittos all year long and still do well in the rain if you like to play on the street.

This car was just made to be my street monster, I plan to visit the track once just to see what it's capable of and that's it. Otherwise i would have put in a 4400 or something. But since my motor is putting out about 60 more RWHP than I wanted, we're going to put in a 3500 stall.
We did talk to Mike at Yank and the converter is being sent to them right now FedEx. There's got to be something wrong with it, I'm hoping.
Yeah, being here in FL is a plus, cold weather and nice dry streets.
I'm gonna try the 275 Nitto's first, if I don't like them I'm gonna widen my factory WS6 rims to 17x11 and put on some 315/35 BFG's.

Quickin,

Cool, I think you'll quickly get used to the 3500 stall on the converter. It's nice fit for a Daily driver on these motors and the control is all in your foot. When you need to put the hurt on someone it's just a toe tip away from a hurricane.

The 275 Nittos are my preferred street tire and they do a nice job. The Nittos hold up better to a beating on the street than the BFGs even though the BFGs might be a tick better at the track.

So you might want to consider the Nitto 315 too if you do go to the 17x11 wide rims. The 315s will give you a nice mean look on the street.

I think I would say the 315s grip slightly to moderatly better than the 275s on the street. There will be a more noticable grip advantage at the track because of the flatter concreate surface of the launch pad at most tracks.

I would say that visual, the 315s do a nice job of filling up the backend on properly setup wheels.
