My 427 now runs smoother than my stock engine
It's a MMS C5R blocked 224/.566/114 motor going on 6000 miles. It runs smooth like butter now since everything now is bedding in, and it feels smoother than my stock motor. Still running on dino breakin oil, and will be changing to Royal Purple oil at 7000 miles. Synthetics will make it run even better. To me "smooth" really means something for my daily driver.

I just can't get a break. Now the converter is slipping at 3800 rpm. And that's with the 2nd BRAND SPANKIN NEW FLP IV tranny. The 1st tranny didn't slip at all, but it had that slow dripping leak. Tomorrow the line pressure is going to be checked, that's all it can be, if so a 3rd tranny will have to be sent to me. I don't even know if I want this car anymore. I have over 500 RWHP waiting to hit the pavement and it's being DENIED!!
What tranny do you have?
How much $$$?
Will it handle 500+ RWHP?
If this 3rd tranny has any issues at all, I'm getting my money back and going with someone else.

Hang in there!
Chuck at FLP is a good guy and will get it right! My trannie was built by Dana from ProBuilt. So far with almost 30 passes no problems yet. It runs on the PCM, and no vacuum modulator installed. I think we are both at the limit. That's why if you want more hp than you do now, you will have to go with a TH400 by Roslier or another builder. Won't be fun without the overdrive. Only thing different from yours, is mine has 3.42 and yours is 3.73 rear end. I don't know if that is a difference with what our trans can hold. I also had a leak but it was from my freeze plut on my trans yoke. I solved that with some 5 min JB Weld.

That's great that your 427 is running awesome now. I remember just last week you were saying how you had two step the car on cold starts. I take it that that problem has also resolved itself? I hope it has.
Quickin:
Man that really sucks man i feel your pain. 2 FLP brand new trannys and issues to boot. I have a FLP level IV also with over 10K miles on it and MTI is currently building me my 427 ironblock which should be good for about 480rwhp and my biggest original worry is these darn 4L60E trannys holding the power. I sure i will have my share of issues and there are always issues when you get radical with these mods. Wish my car was a M6 as tuning the power into the tranny is MUCH EASIER with the manual tranny.
Can you describe what is happening with your slipping converter? Sorry about the simpleton question but i am certainly no mechanic nor calim to be. Are you spanking the rev limiter at WOT or when the converter slips or both?
I am sure Chuck at FLP can get it right but the trial and error and downtime really sucks and i feel your pain. Fortunately for me i live 1/2 hour from FLP but i know all to well that sickening feeling of down time caused by problems with radical mods.
BEST OF LUCK to both of you gentleman
Also, Quicken, what were your final dyno numbers?

Then it's fine at the stopsign which is just a half a block down from my house.

MTI 427 C5 Roadster [/QB]

Well first: the car was completely put together by Mike Norris in the time promised You also must know that my cam is much larger than the one I wanted , we expected about 450 RWHP. Nicks fault there , I asked for a stock-like idle and he chose a 242/242 .610/.610 114lsa I've learned that one mans smooth idle is another mans nightmare, me being that other man. The stock fuel pump could have handled that RWHP. Mike even mentioned that he expects a fuel pressure problem before he dynoed it. He dynoed it, untuned and pulled 480 RWHP just before 5000 rpm, when the fuel pressure dropped 3 psi. As soon as it passed 5000 rpm it quickly dropped 10 psi more. The run was aborted.
That was the only problem, everything else performed fine. A day before I was going to get the car the tranny started to drip, drip, drip
Ok, I'm a sport, I'll wait patiently for another tranny **** happens. It arrives, gets put in and now the slipping converter at 3800 rpm. Never got anywhere close to WOT, the converter would melt. It just starts to slip in a bad way. You must let off the gas or you'll destroy the converter.
Being patient is no problem for me, it's the extra $500 I already spent on this rental car. If it's the tranny again, I'm sure I'm looking at another couple weeks in all.
So no, I don't have final dyno numbers yet. It's been guessed that it will be well over 500 RWHP, I have no clue. Another guy with an ARE 436 (slightly smaller cam than me 240/240 I think, everything else the same) put down 453 at 5000, and 496 at 6300. So I think if I guess from that car, I should be around 515-520 at 6300ish. I don't know.
I just want the car back so I go for a

Chris

Well, I really don't want a lopey idle. I literally spent the extra $10-12,000, whatever it was, for a stroker over a H/C motor just to have a smooth idle. That's allot of money to spend on idle alone.
The cam should have been a 230/230, how can a 230/230 be mistaken for a 242/242? Thats like installing an 8cyl. into a 6cycl. car by accident. It has caused allot other problems, the PCM tune we had by Ed Wright, the converter choice (it has to be changed tomorrow it's too tight for the idle now), my idle quality is out the window (I geared this entire project around the idle) and the gas mileage won't be anywhere near good anymore. Wade just put in whatever was on my order sheet (from Nick in February) so it's not his fault. Wade has also told me that if I don't like that cam he'll gladly change it for me.
I hope I love the power and I can deal with the idle, that would be kick-***.

PS Really I'm just complaining about the bi-product, the idle.

Hi Lyle,
If you want more power and have it run like stock, lower the compression a little, put in a small cam like mine with a 5lb blower. Or a small cam and a nitrous kit.

You might also consider the MMS 229v2.1, I had that in my 396 and it idled like stock! My new 242/236 110ls has a bit more lope.

My personal choice?...I'd go with the Hughes built 4L80E. They rebuilt my second 4L60E and gave me a 1 year warranty with it. I've had no problems since (rapidly approaching the one year mark now). I'll be honest, I'm kind of jaded since I live in Phoenix...where they're located. If I have problems I don't have to go far.
Good luck with the car. I've gone through allot of crap with my car too (5 figures $), but at the end of the day it's just too much fun to get rid of.

I'm having too much fun too! Should change my name to "half-throttle" cause now I got so much power I can't do the pedaltothemetal much anymore!
