The spec on the rods is somewhat vague , is the rod material 4340 or 5140?

NO not really patrolman although you are right that 90 per cent of shops don't do anything other than assemble their engines and as long as everything is done right it "should" work. We do blueprint all of our engines since that is not good enough for us and we are used to doing race engines where everything must checked. I set ring gaps and rod bearing clearance and main bearing clearance and thrust clearance and pin clearance and quench and wall clearance and deck height etc. to what WE want. That is what blueprinting is. You are not setting stuff up and letting tolerances take up the slack. We have X, STD and 1 bearings in stock for rods and mains and they are juggled as well as the housing sizes and journal sizes to get what we want. We don't just machine to within tolerance and then assemble like 90 per cent of shops do. We set up everything like we want which means we have to measure everything and then mock stuff up etc. multiple times before and after machining. We actually do all shortblocks IN-HOUSE. We do our own valve reliefs, make our own Jesel stands etc. I have 4 LS1 TQ plates and like 7 different gaskets. Most of the other guys farm all this out so they have no idea if their stuff is good, bad or otherwise because they didn't even do it in the first place.

I only have two questions: Who are you guys using in the Dayton/Columbus area? I've been looking for someone to install a forged engine w/heads and cam on my Vette. And would this engine work in the Vette?
check out:

Try and find posts from Mike Brown on Daytonfbody.org, he can do an install for you as he has done other C5s. For us F-body guys, we do the work ourselfs (club guys), and I tune them. I have tuned a few C5 also, but you'll need either LS1 Edit or HP Tuner.

Your best bet to get in touch with Mike Brown is to Find Kevin 276 on cofba or daytonfbody. Mike is too busy to post on there.

That was an interesting first post dont ya think?
On another note I got a reply from slp today on the bolts. I emailed them asking if the arp rod and main bolts were optional. and i quote

Hi Raymond,
The ARP bolts come standard with the 402 package so there is no upgrade
needed.

Excellent info! Perhaps a 402 in the future for Ray? I'm HIGHLY considering one myself.

Guys-
These engines are the "legit" - I think you're looking too far into it for missing links, cut-corners, or pitfalls...you won't find any

To answer a few concerns, SLP's 402 comes standard with:
H-beam Eagle rods
Clevite Bearings - rod/mains (not stock GM - save for cam bearings, which are GM)
ARP rod bolts...

And to clarify a little further on assembly:
All SLP 402 engines ARE built 100% by SLP, in Toms River, NJ - not farmed out
We measure and cut/set EVERY ring gap on EVERY individual cylinder
We mockup-assemble and measure EVERY bearing clearance
Rod stretch on rod installs
Iron blocks ARE machined by SLP for LS1 accessory drives

BTW, engines and kits are IN STOCK and SHIPPING -

For those that prefer to build their own engines, we also offer the 402 rotating assembly outright. We have photos of the rotating assembly on the webpage, albeit, they are small photos. Car Craft magazine will be running a full editorial with good detail photos of all the parts in an upcoming issue. They also will have a 'video' of the 402 on our dyno, being thrashed

I recently recieved a coupon in the mail for 10% off. Does this discount apply to the 402?

it seems a 402 would be a good investment because you still have room for a future build.isn't .o30 over all you want to overbore these iron blocks?if i got a 408 and maybe had a ring failure or something that scored the cylinder wall i would be pissed if the block was allready ruint.does hre or hpe build unbored blocks? a .030 overbore only gains you 5-10 hp anyways.
