Default Help!!!!!! cam install and to many bolts

hey guys me and a friend are doing a cam swap on my c5z and he was helping me take apart the front of the motor and now that im putting it back together i have more bolts than I need. He is out of town and I have no clue where all these bolts go. I Have the ten for timing cover, 4 for the cam plate, and the 4 for the water pump and the small one for the pickup tube and the three for the cam. I have two small bolts left over that look to be the same size as the cam bolts Any help guys would be appreciated.

Isn't there a cam retainer, then a timing gear?

There are two vertical bolts that hold the front cover to the pan. If looking at it from outside the vehicle, you won't see those missing. They go through the bottom of the front of the pan into the front cover pointing straight up. Otherwise I would vote either oil pump(maybe you accidentally took some of those out) or damper(but you say you don't have one). You also have a couple of bolts holding on engine harness/AC lines on some models. They bolt into the front cover or oil pan but don't actually hold the covers on but provide attachment points for the harness(es). Last, there are the thermostat and tensioner bolts to consider, but would likely be different size.

Are there holes for a damper? Maybe it was taken out and you didn't notice?

Solo my mistake I ment to put oil pump. I have the six long bolts for the water pump. And I will check or a dampner tonight

The bolts at the top are for the oil pump The. The middle bolt is for pickup. Then The smaller bolts are for the camshaft. But I have five. Smh. This is why I don't like people working on my things

2 smaller ones are probably oil pan to timing cover from under neath the car.

Careful torquing the pan and cover or the pan will crack if u do it wrong.

P.s. next time zip loc bags and post it's go a long way. Just finished a heads and cam install myself and all bolts were easy to identify this way.

The chain damper uses two larger bolts bigger then the timing cover, cam retainer, oil pump tube...etc. However this is a prime example why I put all the removed bolts in seperate zip lock baggies and marked them.

I'm usually pretty good about putting my bolts in bags and labelling. Guess I thought since there wasn't that many I could get away without. Big mistake. I was already frustrated with how the day was going yesterday and I didn't need to be working on it. Now that I've calmed down I can look at it in a different mindset and figure it out.

Everybody who has worked on a car has done something they are not proud of.
Thats just life.
I can see why you confused them, your work area is way to clean and spacious.
The voices in my head would echo very loud in there, creating confusion.

Niiice. If I saw oil I never would have thought exhaust, either. And this will be me in a couple of weeks. I pulled all the accessories off the front of the V as well as the engine mounts and put them all in a magnetic tray saying I would label them all once I finished the job. Well I slept before I labeled them so they're in a nice pile along with the head ground bolts and other misc stuff. At least you only had two unknowns!

I get claustrophobic in anything smaller than a two car garage. I guess I've been spoiled with so much room.
