I thought so too, but its really not. Assuming I did it correctly, it's actually pretty straight forward:

1) find base circle of cam
2) insert checker pr and bolt on rockers
3) extend tool until you find zero lash
4) count turns on checker to get pr length
5) repeat for each cylinder and average your measurements
6) add in desired preload to your average for final pr length
7) order pr

Do you just soak and install the lifters, put your heads on, then check pushrod length and add recommended preload? Just making sure im not missing anything.

I was so torn on this because my Crane Cams books specifically says not to soak hydraulic lifters, but many seem to suggest it.

Could you just use permatex ultra lube on them instead or does the oil need to soak into them or something? Is the onky purpose to protect them on a dry start up?

The main reason I soak them is sometimes there is debris leftover from machining. I've never heard of soaking lifters being specifically disrecommended

So the soaking of the lifters has nothing to do with getting the correct length pushrods? You could soak them overnight, put them in the next day, then measure for pushrod length a few days later?

correct. Soaking will help keep them from sticking after you do stuff but that's about it.
