Help! Cant get oil pump on!
So Im in the middle of a camswap(tick torquemax stg 2) and for the life of me I cannot get the oil pump back on and over the pickup tube while trying to align the gear in pump to get back onto crank. My question is, can I dissassemble the pump and put the housing on and back on pickup tube then assemble the pump after its mounted? Looks simple enough but didnt know if I had to have shims to do this. It is just a GM pump so nothing aftermarket. Looking for anyone that had this issue as well. And yes the oil pan is lower a little bit already.
Thanks in advance
Exactly. You should take it apart for installation. We were just discussing this in another thread(above) where you can see a pic of the process.
It's one of those "right way" steps that a lot of folks seem to skip that only takes 5 minutes.

I've found that it's easier to get the pickup tube bolted up when the pump is disassembled and without the drive gear on the snout. You get a lot of wiggle room to get the pickup flange lined up and avoid pinching the o-ring. Then you can get the bare housing bolted up, centered, and then assembled.

Still, it's really simple, just maybe a little hard to explain. Here's the pic I posted in another thread:

The gear that the oil pump housing is centered on is the drive gear for the oil pump. With that gear on, there's only a little bit of clearance between it and the pump housing so if you try to bolt up the pickup tube, it doesn't have much room to wiggle or rock to line up. The pickup can go in crooked and pinch the o-ring.
Now if you leave the drive gear off of the snout when you put the pump on, then it has a lot more room to move, allowing you to line up the pickup tube properly and avoid pinching the o-ring. With the pickup tube installed and the bolt torqued, you can put the drive gear on over the snout of the crank and get the pump centered.
