Default rebuilding 317 heads question

im doing a forged bottom end lq4 with an 88mm turbo... my machine guy said that he cannot reuse the stock valves in the heads because they are basicaly throw away valves. he is doing a simple cleanup and installing BTR springs... does this sound normal or is he going overboard.

That's not true. The stock valves are reused all the time. I have the machine shop grind a new 45 degree cut and skim cut the tips and they're good to go.

I actually had plans of new valves in my 317 heads and my machinist was the one that talked me out of them and said he could make the stock ones work great and the money could be used towards head studs instead of my plan of just arp head bolts

As long as nothing is wrong with the factory valves they can be reused. Plenty of people out there making good power with the stock valves.

We've seen 800+ on stock valves. Not forever of course, but as long as they're not bent or trashed you can most definitely reuse them.

ok then maybe i should save my coin and just clean them up at my work in our hot tank instead of having him charge me 350 to clean them, inspect and install new springs? i mean i can put the friggin springs in! and the motor ran perfect before disassembly for the turbo build. it only has 107k on the heads.

I would highly suggest at least putting new springs on since you plan to boost it. If you need a spring kit with titanium retainers give me a shout and I'll get you a set shipped over asap!

springs absolutely... I was going to get a kit from brian tooley but if your price is better then hell yeah. And then I'll just get cam separately then... I'll be running the btr stage 3 turbo cam... possibly a custom grind.
