Default Biggest cam for stock LS1 A4

I have a 1999 TA A4 with a TSP224R cam and supporting mods (springs, oil pump and push rods, the springs are rated at .600). Im installing a Precision 3800 stall and trans cooler and want to install a larger cam. I also have an LS6 intake and long tube headers with true duel exhaust.

My question what size cam should I get???? I want the largest i can go with just the cam swap and springs and the rest. not a DD just a weekend cruiser.

I had a TSP228r before and liked it in my SS. but i think those are small cams now. what is the largest i can go? really want it to thump just a street cruiser

They make thumpr cams bro. How to determine how much it thumps is to calculate overlap at .050. Add duration at .050 int and exh then divide that by 2. Subtract by (2(LSA)) The larger the number the more thump.

I wouldn't go bigger than this for your mods and goals.

I run the TSP 233/239 on 112 on my A4. But i am also running a circle D 5c converter (4000).

its the biggest cam i would run comfortably.

other cams that should be mentioned are speed inc SI5 231/237.

The Titan 5 is an excellent choice for your combo. The next step up is the Titan King, but I too like the Titan 5 for your combo.

Our Vindicator (though I may be biased) would be my choice. It works extremely well with a 3,800 though we typically recommend going to a 4,000 for guys seeing more track use. It's a 240/244 .601/.596 112+4 and I have a lot of guys using it in weekend street/strip cars with excellent results even with stock heads. I've linked it below for you, and feel free to e-mail or call me if I can help with any questions on it!

just remember that a BIG cam just might make your car slower than the 224 that's in it now. Just to sound cool. any gain will be over 5500 rpm and will kill lower rpm torque a little.

EPS 236/248 110...

Of course, I wouldn't want to drive that on the street. But it'd make a ton up top.

I don't know if a Precision 3800 is a loose or tight converter. The looser it is, the more RPM extension you'll have. Which will make a bigger cam faster as you'll never drop out of that peak range above 5500 or even 6000 if you really push it.

If my low lash solid roller were a hydraulic it would be approximately a 234/242. Stock bottom end LS2, has ported/milled 799s and around 11.2:1 compression. I wouldn't want any bigger.

No way on Earth I would run a larger cam than mine in a street driven LS1 car. Just my $.02 as other people prefer different things.

Agreed. That's the limit. My old cam was a 234/242 and it pulled like a **** and was streetable. I would hate to DD it in traffic. Hence why I switched and now doing FI...

I also agree. That's essentially what size I'm currently running in my A4 car now. Its alot of fun on the weekends, but I can't imagine trying to DD it or anything much larger in the stop and go traffic we have here in Atl. But everyone's tolerance levels are slightly different.

Honestly my 230/238 was sometimes more than I cared for when my car was still ls1 powered.

A better tune might have helped some.

I would not put a 240 duration cam in a street driven LS1. 228/232 would be my choice.
