I hate to bring up another one of these threads, but I'm curious if this is steep.

went to a shop near me and was quoted almost 1500 for a hot tanking, bore and hone, polish crank, balance rotating assembly, and install new bearings/assemble shortblock.

the thing that's giving me pause is they're only charging 300 for assembly, which leaves 1200 for the machine work. I have no problem paying for quality work, but I don't want to get ripped off.

To me, it doesn't sound bad. In my neck of the woods, I received a couple quotes around that amount ($1200.00 to 1500.00). However, it did not include balancing the rotating assembly and assembling the shortblock.

Sounds with in reason if they do quality work.

Last two quotes I got for building a long block complete intake to oil pan, ready to install with me providing all parts and the very reputable shop providing all machine work and labor was $2500 to $3000. This including checking dis-assembley and re-assembly etc of the cylinder heads being provided.

The last quote I got for a .030" overbore on a 6.0 block, with hot-tank, finish hone, and new cam bearings was $150.

Taking a 5.3 out to a 5.7 with the same work done was $350.

Last year I paid $910 for hot tank, cam bearings, deck block, bore/hone with torque plate, balance and crank polish. In the Detroit area.

Sounds normal from my pricing around. I paid around $2000 for a shop to machine and assemble my stroker shortblock. That included balancing the reciprocating assembly, along with freshening up the 317 heads with new valves and BTR springs.

Alright, thanks for the responses. The number at first seemed kind of high to me, but I suppose that goes with the saying "Quality work isn't cheap, and cheap work isn't quality".

I am not sure where you live but in ny near the city i was quoted between 1200-1500. One shop in jersey that was on horsepower tv LRB performance machine quoted me $3500 for the exact work you want done.

My gripe with this is most of the the time you end up with a block that is less true than a high mileage OEM block. What are your power goals and plans for the engine? Depending on your goals, I've found it's better to try and reach your goals without involving the machine shop when possible. Pay a little more for a newer long block is great shape with lower miles and run a power adder of some sort.

I'm planning on h/c/i for now. Probably a supercharger at about 5 psi in the future.

I just had my shortblock refreshed and had it assembled into a long block for $1800.. New cam, rod, main bearings, piston rings, arp rod bolts, polished crank, lightly honed the cylinders, and hot tanked it. They measured PTV and pushrod length for me, resized for ARP rod bolts, degreed my cam in properly (cam motion core, said it was spot on!), installed new rear main seal and oil pan gasket (I provided the rest of the gaskets). I feel like i got a hell of a deal, but still haven't started it yet lol. They don't do a ton of performance builds, but open to doing them as they come in. I will be starting it up saturday to find out how she does!

I forgot to mention, the best part is they agreed to a 90 day warranty on the shortblock! They really didn't want to, but i needed something for peace of mind.. i was expecting 15-30 days, but he said 90 and i ran with it lol.
