Default 243 heads

I have a 2002 ws6 trans am automatic car with 3.23 gears. It has tsp 1 3/4 lts, ory, ported stock tb, 160 t. stat, slp lid, slp dual dual catback, and circle d 278mm 3200 converter. I'm thinking about getting a vinci 216 224 cam with 585 lift with a 115 lsa or 113 lsa. How much improvement would stock unported 243s be over my stock unported 241s and would it be worth it for all the labor involved. I can get a stock pair of rebuilt 243s for $600.

If you do some searching around you'll find a ton of threads on the power difference some with before/after dyno graphs so it will give you a nice idea of what to expect.

I say go for it. If you're already in there to swap in a cam and the associated valve train components then it's really not much more work to swap the heads. If you do decide to install 243s, I'd suggest getting some .40" cometic head gaskets to improve your quench and boost the compression further.

I apologize I got mixed up, I did some searching and the threads with before/after dyno results that I was referring to is for the ls6 cam not the ls6 heads. FWIW, I wouldn't be surprised if the heads would be worth ~20hp on a cam-only car.

What would the compression be with the .40 head gasket. I think the stock 243 chamber is 64cc and the ls6 motor had 10 5 1 compression with the 243s. My stock compression is 10 to 1.

IIRC the .40 gasket will bump it from 10.5-1 to ~10.85-10.90-1.

You might see 10-15 hp w/ the 243's over your 241's but w/ all the worked involved I would personally send them out for some kind of work.

Its not the HP but the average gain of torque.

if you put that cam in, within a few weeks you would have wished you went bigger.

I'd go a smidge bigger, lower 220s on the intake, you will make tons of torque. Maybe 222 226 113+3? Mid to upper .500 lifts?

If you were just going to change heads and not do anything to them? 862s would be the way to go if you haven’t purchased the 243s. Then, use the money you saved for a pair of 3.910 bore .040 cosmetic head gasket. Said the guy 2-1/2 years later...jeez

Duped by an old thread. This seems to be a trend recently.
