Yeah it always sucks when you find yourself in the position of trading best performance for a little less chop. That'll have to be a personal call there. If it helps at all, think of which one you may regret later, will you at some point wish the car made the most power the most efficiently, or does it chop. Or flip a coin lol.

I like the lamp cam plan!

Hi Everyone,

Sorry to see the issue with your engine/lifters. I highly recommend you do a complete tear down and inspect all the bearings etc. We went through the same thing on a couple big cam LS engines. Upon dissecting to find out the cause, we found tiny particles in the lifter needle bearings. Small particles were also embedded in the rod bearings. Obviously, something in the engine was causing the particles or it could be just normal wear from break in like from cylinder walls etc. We think tiny particles going through the lifter needle bearings and heavier spring pressures caused roller to lock up every now and then and then got worse (squeaking noise that took forever to figure out) as more hardened roller particles came off and went through the oil system. We were wondering why the filter didn't stop the particles? After a thorough study and investigation, we found two things. The factory plastic barbell/oil diverter that diverts the oil down to the oil filter fits very loose allowing particles to leak past it directly into the cam bearing and lifters. The second thing was the bypass check valve usually found where the oil filter screws on or in the oil pan can pop open when the proper oil pressure differential is achieved allowing unfiltered oil back through the system. Most Oil filters already have a bypass built into them should the filter ever get restricted, so the factory bypass is not needed. Most of us especially on these types of forums keep our oil filters changed anyway so we don't worry about a restricted filter. Through all this we developed a couple products to help stop unfiltered oil from going through the engine. They are a Billet Precision Fit Barbell that seals much better and forces all the oil down to the filter. It also improves oil flow with its 30% smaller shaft design. We also have a Billet Bypass Delete if yours is mounted in the where the oil filter screws on. Here is more in depth info and videos if you are interested.

Finally got around to tearing it down. Looks like some lobes got chewed up. I guess 10 years of high lift will do that. Bearing surfaces seem ok though... thoughts?

That looks bad! Bummer!
Do the lifter rollers roll smooth? You have to put a little pressure on them with your thumb when you roll them to see if they feel smooth or if they are rough. What we found on our high lift cam issues were the needle bearing would go bad and the roller would skid on the cam lobe causing a squeak the sounds like a belt squeak.

all but 4... the lifters associated with the damaged lobes had pitted rollers, they rolled but squeeled when I ran them across my arm.
Talked to some friends and we are thinking replace oil pump, timing chain, lifters, cam, oil, oil filter, and inspect and possibly replace rockers when I pull engine out to put clutch on. Bearing surfaces seemed good and I’m looking into your products as well

Ya, all that hardened metal particles will be in the lifter needle bearings. Need to replace all of the lifters with the new cam. The timing chain to since it would be hard to thoroughly clean it. The pump could be cleaned if it looks good when you open it up. Make sure you clean the pressure relief valve in it.

thanks. I’m pulling the block out to put a new clutch and flywheel since it’s already almost out anyways. Be a good time to do all that stuff. Plan on putting it back in with NA to break in new clutch then back under knife to mount the blower, and fuel system. Also drag bags and the likes.

I've seen varying opinions regarding lifter noises. Some people ignore it and don't seem to have any serious issues. Mine got loud enough that I decided to have the lifters replaced. Luckily, I didn't have any damage to the rollers or cam. Good excuse to replace the cam anyway.
