Are Comp Cam Trunions ok?
#61
Most bearing trunion kits (besides Sharp) use a case hardened shaft with small needle bearings.
Depending on the hardness depth, cam lobes & springs you might get lucky but why would you risk the outer hard layer flaking off?
It's risky because they're batch heat treated, never know how deep they're heat treated after grinding.
FWIW T&D uses case hardened shafts but are deep case hardened & have pressurized oiling.

I have seen a good amount just on this site. And almost everyone that checked and found the problem didn't here any noise. Most didn't have that many miles. I am going to check mine when i swap motors next year.

Well I'd say if your running under .600 lift on the cam your probably okay with the Comp trunion upgrade. Let us know how it turns out for you. As for me I'm going with the Straub bushings and hope this solves the problem. If not I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and go with the JESEL roller rocker arms designed for the LS7 heads on the 5th Gen. COPO Camaro. The thought of spending $3400 on a set of these rocker arms is sickening though.

You might be okay with the Comp trunnion upgrade. But if you are planning to upgrade (vs already have the Conp kit iinstalled), why opt for Comp in the first place? I would just get a bronze bushing kit right off the bat, especially since the price isn't much different.

Straub bushing kit
Just installed my first set, and found them to be a hi Q product!
My email response to Chris:
Chris, I got the kit yesterday. Thanks for the FAST service. Order Fri, get Tues!
Also, the kit was installed using some of the parts from the Summit caged brg tool kit. :O)
The engine is new, and has the CC brg kit in it.
I had a set of spare rockers, so your kit has been installed in them. [Ultrasonic cleaner works wonders!]
Took <1 hr to do them. Had NO bushing shavings, fitment issues.
They are going on the engine today...
The packaging was very well done, the parts were CLEAN!
I disassembled the rockers, ran them in an ultrasonic cleaner, and had cleaner than new, parts to work with.
The unused rockers w/ the CC kit installed, is for sale.

Anyone care to comment on the Scoggin Dickey Trunnion upgrade as an alternative to the Comp? These are both available to me down here but the Comp is clearly not the best choice and I know nothing of the SDPC version.

The Scoggin Dickey kit is a trunnion bushing kit which is proving a better alternative to the caged needle bearing kits, which seem to come with trunnions that are not sufficiently hardened for needle bearing duty. The bushing kits are proving durable and quiet. I don't know whether S/D is making their own or getting them from a supplier, but I would go for a bushed kit over a needle bearing kit at this stage of the game

Thanks guys, I am thinking they may be Smith Brothers as I found another supplier here that sells Smith Bothers too but no Straub or CHE available here. Hopefully they are decent although my cam is only a Cam Motion 218/226 116 .585 .587 so not much lift.

Straub, Smith Bros., and CHE all have very good reps. You'll be in good hands with any of them.
