Default Are Comp Cam Trunions ok?

I will be installing a tsp 228r 112 lsa cam soon. I already have the comp cam trunions on hand. After seeing a post about how bad these trunions are in the gen iv section, I was wondering if they are acceptable for my ls1?

Thanks

No. You'll have to replace them in 6-10k miles.

Either the Straub or the CHE Bronze bushed trunnions.

Or, if TSP ever releases their steel roller rockers, that might be the ticket.

No. Use a kit with bronze bushings. Or an aftermarket full roller rocker with a roller tip.

Straub for sure... Best bang for the buck and a rock-solid product. Use plenty of assembly lube when installing/assembly and do not countersink the bushings.

Any smoke signals on when TSP will be releasing their roller-tip rockers?

We will have the first run complete and ready for sale in about 2-3 weeks. That run is limited and we expect to sell out pretty quickly. Keep checking with us, or follow our FB page for the announcement.

On the trunion kits, we have the straub kits available if you guys are interested. OP I know you are using our 228R cam, so if you got the trunion kit from us as well and it is unopened, we would be happy to switch you for the straub bushing kit.

TSP, I check your website occasionally. When will you put them up on the site? I'd like to see what they look like.

I know of someone that's done 70+ sets of Comp Cams trunion upgrades and never had an issue with a single rocker. He described about a half dozen ways it's possible to screw up the trunion upgrade if someone isn't on top of the details and instructions. I think an expert engine builder can install them without issue.

One of the most common pitfalls is if used rockers are being upgraded. The expert I spoke with said typically at least 2 of out 16 rockers have established bad wear patterns and need to be discarded. The rest of a batch of used rockers required very careful checking and sometimes filing or grinding on areas that that contact the valve tip. Failure to inspect and fix, set the grounds for failure. New rocker should also be checked.

Dirt and contamination is also an issue. How often are used rockers given ultra sonic cleaning before being reused?

Any sort of burr can set the stage for disaster.

in other words, it's easy to screw up the trunion upgrade and not even realize it. Reading the instructions helps but the whole idea of check everthing twice also comes into play.

Any error In what is described above is mine and I'm sure there are details I forgot to include.

I personally would NEVER attempt to do the CCams trunion upgrade myself. There is a small number of expert engine builder and cylinder head masters I would trust to do the Comp Cams trunion upgrade for me.

Jake, i would not say without a doubt NO. Recently we had 3 customers check theirs and showed zero wear with more than 10k on them. Is there a definive reason why they look fine? No. They all use different oil amd filters, have different cams, and drive their cars their own way. The bushings are a nice upgrade, but bushings wear as well. Not on a "6-10k" interval but they do wear.

Do research and do as you wish. We sell both. Recently we have sold more bushings tham before but we still sell the reg trunions also.

We are actually having a special on the comp style trunions already installed on ls1 style rockers soon.

I got my comp trunions from autozone because I used a 25% coupon a few months ago. They are unopened, so I am just going to sell them on ebay for the price I got them. I will probably go with the straub kit when I order the 228r and ls6 heads from you guys for a piece of mind.

I just installed the Summit Racing upgraded rocker arm kit on my LS1.
I wanted new factory rockers and not used ones to replace mine and trusted Summit to install the comp cam trunnion kit properly.

The rockers came with a coating of Molykote which most shops recommend but charge extra for as they have to send them out.
They also came with new ARP bolts.

Hoping to get many trouble free miles from them.

I bought the Lunati upgraded rockers back when they first came out (since it was $240 for the trunnions and brand new rockers). The kit looks pretty similar to the Comp/Summit/BTR kit.

I have a set of the Straubs here and will look at the Lunatis pretty soon. I didn't make the switch last summer when I swapped cams as they still looked good. So I may continue to roll with them until I need to switch. But I've always run either VR1 or LS30 oil in the car and it spins to 7k no problem.

The new trend is bronze bushings, basically everyone copying CHE's idea.

Everyone and their dog used comp cams trunion kits years ago without issue.

Like what was said above, the majority of the failures seem to be from user error. Pressing in the caged bearing cockeyed. Then it's just a matter of time before you have abnormal wear.

Do some research on successful builds and you'll see comp cams trunions pop up a lot in years past.

6k-10k miles? From your google research?

Ford and Chrysler have used bronze bushing material in rocker assemblies for decades. It's been going on 60 years. That's why we are called the "Aftermarket". We do it "after" the oems have.

There's way too many Roller needle bearings out there that have deteriorated over a short amount of time. The Bronze bushings have been on the market long enough with fantastic results (Compared to the Summing/Comp needles). I have a BRAND NEW set installed in my break in motor and the first thing I'm doing one it's tuned and ready is to replace them with the Straub or Smith Bro's. racing Bronze replacements. They're priced competitively now, it's a no brainer. I don't even want to have to check these damn rockers every 5k miles for wear when the bronze have already surpassed the others. Just MHO...
