Default 2002 5.3 vs 2006 5.3

Is the 5.3 from a 2002 truck the same as a 5.3 from a 2006 truck, and are the interchangeable.

The 2006 5.3 has better rods but the engines are interchangeable. There is an aluminum 2006 5.3(L33) with higher compression and more hp that is also interchangeable.

1999-2007 Gen3 5.3 engines are all interchangeable. For a stronger more powerful engine, I would stick with the Mid Year 2004 to 2007 5.3 engines or the H.O. L33 5.3 if at all possible.

-Gen3 5.3 Breakdown-
1999 LM7 5.3 Power - 270-HP/315-Tq
2000-2003 5.3 Power - 285-Hp/325-Tq
2004-2007 5.3 Power - 295-Hp/335-Tq (Mid Year 2004, GM Started using the stronger rods)
2005-2007 H.O. L33 5.3 Power - 310-Hp/335-Tq ("Floating" Rods and Flat top pistons used, Aluminum Block, 799/243 heads)

*99-02 will have non-coated piston skirts.

*99-03 used 3 different length head bolts. 04-Up used 2 different lengths, also known as equal length head bolts.

*99-04 will have press-fit wrist pins.

*Mid Year 2004 GM started using the Gen4 "Floating" Rods which were a better, stronger design. Might be safer to look at 2005+ to be sure of the rods.

Like mentioned above, there is an all aluminum L33 5.3 H.O. which makes 310-Hp/335 Lb-Ft of Torque. This engine was only used from 2005-2007 in Extended Cab 4WD's.

Also, watch out for engines with the 706 "Castech" Heads. They often crack and will cause coolant to leak into the cylinders. I don't think I have seen any Castech heads that arn't cracked.

This should be enough information to get you going and decide on what you want to do.

The biggest issue is to check the reluctor wheel on the crank.

The 02 I know has the 24x wheel, the 06 I believe has the 58x wheel.

What's it going into? If the ecm is 24x then you will either need to swap out the 58x for a 24x or get a convertor. That cost way more then pulling the crank and taking it to an engine machine shop and have them do the swap.
