Default Oddball factory heads, or no?
So I've got a 2008 Silverado with the 4.8, and just noticed today the casting number on the heads was 243, that seemed a little odd since I've been out of the performance scene for a few years and last I remember that was the ls6 head casting numbers. Did a little digging and as far as I can tell my truck was supposed to come with 799 casting heads? Just tickled my curiosity and was hoping you guys would have an easy answer.

799 is a later incarnation of the revered 243, and is functionally identical. 799's are sand-cast, and 243's are die-cast. No functional difference. There might have been some 243's still being made or in inventory when your truck was built, as they transitioned into the 799. These heads is the reason for the HP boost in Gen IV truck engines. Put a mild cam in that 4.8 and it will reward you with a nice power boost! You already have good heads!

Thank you sir. I'm actually planning on selling the truck soon, and just wanted to make sure I wasn't getting rid of some kind of rare higher output factory option or something without knowing what I had!! I know about the ls6 heads and their potential, that's why it surprised me to see them on this truck since I'd never really looked at it as a "performance" vehicle.

Fleet Mechanic here, we have a bunch of new 3/4 Vans with 4.8's and most of them have
799's but there are several 243's, so no you are not setting on anything rare.

So the 243's are still in production. I thought they were phased out a while back.

My 12' Silverado has a 5.3 with 243's on it. I have a buddy who owns a 11' Silverado with the 4.8, and it also has 243's on it.

If I think about it I will get a pic, next time one comes in. We have some Suburbans with
them as well, they are 5.3's though, and run pretty dang good for a big ole Boat.
So thats what they tell me anyway.

Slogo, I agree! We have a 2008 Suburban with a 5.3, and it has no trouble getting out of its own way! Plenty of torque. A good head can do that...
