Default 243 heads on a 408 stroker lq4? And question about compression

Would the 243 Heads be okay on a 408 stroker I'm looking for a lot of bottom end torque ill end up putting a level 2 performabuilt behind it it also has 4.10s in the back its a 2001 Silverado 1500,

How high can I go on the compression and still run 85 octane?

EIGHTY FIVE
cat **** has more octane than that geezus
I would keep it around 10:1 and run at least a 230@.050" intake lobe cam
Need to keep the cranking compression under130 for that diarrhea fuel

If trying to run 85-88 octane theres no need for 243/799 heads. Youll need to keep compression down so just use the 317's that were on the 6.0. The 317's and 243/799' share the same intake and exhaust port but 243/799 have 64cc chambers and 317 have 72cc chambers.

What is the price difference, are you really saving that much money...?

( not even considering vs cost to repair engine )

243's would work as a budget head but you'd make more hp with a larger intake port around 245cc. I think Mast, Edelbrock and World make large port cathedral heads.

It's probably because of the elevation he is at. At high elevations the low octane fuels do not need to be as high a number as at sea level and the fuel suppliers typically supply what will work in that area.

This. Common practice in the Rocky Mountain region and nearby states. New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and Utah come to mind.

The mean elevation for the entire state of Utah is 6100 ft per Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...s_by_elevation

That said I'd still run 91 in any application where you're trying to make power.
