I have a 4L60 Automatic transmission.
Thinking about a 3.36 gear ratio
Will need a new converter

Youll get more out of the converter initially than the gear

Tony Mamo made 480 whp with a 224/228 using his old AFR 205's and a ported Fast90. If you want to make good power and keep it civil, spend the money on good heads and intake with a mild cam.

What was the control group? Need a baseline to see gains, otherwise peak numbers are useless.

Lingenfelter himself always said similar. Much more fun for street driving as well. Heck you can use the very mild GT2-3 and ported heads, 241, 243, 5.3(add valves) and make 400rwhp. Quite a few GTO people have and the manners are impeccable. Has an OEM feel.

No dyno tricks as folks here post-uber light flywheel, no accessories, on the edge timing, open exhaust, hurricane wind ram air via exterior fan, etc.

Jakes recommendation is about as good a recommendation as youll get
Completely agree...I'm a bit above now with what I've changed since before, but my rwhp was 425 and rwtq was 409. On a verrrrry stingy dynomite and 92 degree humid day.... the power curve driving seemed to pull just as hard at 3000 as it did at 6000, just kept pulling..excellent street manners.

His Vette trapped almost 125 in the 1/4 with that setup. How is that for control group?

The combo I posted earlier in this thread is a mild cam. 228R single pattern and the cam didn't have much lift at all vs some other cams on the market. The car put down 445 at the rear tires on a stingy mustang dyno with a aftrmarket stall.
If the 220 as cast TFS heads was combined with a custom cam from a mad scientist such as Pat G or Brian Tooley. I think 460 rwhp is at the finger tips with EASE threw a stall.... best part about the as cast tfs heads they deliver big numbers for less than alot of other aftermarket heads on the market.

For 400 HP though, that is bolt ons and a moderate cam. Like fusion said. Something in the 227/233 range with 600-620 lift will be more than enough, assuming headers and a decent intake.

I agree, heads plus mild cam builds are way awesome. Op just does not need head work for his goals.

Small cams and good heads is way more fun. Really can suprise people and you will take cam only cars lunch money.

It's like I walked into an alternate universe where we have to take power away with all this small cam talk Yep, the EPS 226/234 in my old LS6 was great.

Also how about a reverse split cam like the old TR 230/224 .580s 111.....I read about guys making very good TQ with high HP with reverse split cams MTI x1 is another 230/227 .591 .571 112

Reverse split cams are good for when your intake is more restrictive than your exhaust, such as the factory ls1 or ls2 intakes with long tube headers.

Usually, once you have upgraded your intake to a LS6 or fast intake, you do better with a traditional split.

Ws6store asa cam is a good mid-range cam. It will not run with the larger cams, but it is not intended to. It will easily support the 400 rwhp goal of the thread title.

Lunati's 277/283 (113/109) might be worth considering as well. UDHarold designed them to specifically compete and beat comp XE lobes. He claimed he had a better overall design to pull more vacuum and make more power. For what its worth, the XE lobes from comp were his design as well.
  • Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 227/233
  • Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .584"/.584"
  • LSA/ICL: 113/109
  • Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd
  • RPM Range: 2200-6800

Just for some sanity here. I have a 224/224 .563/.563 -112 decent chop at idle with 0* overlap, good torque throughout and good top end. ls6 intake, 1 3/4 long tubes and home ported 241's. Made 365whp on a mustang dyno. The key for you will be investing in good heads with a mid sized cam.
