The 5.3 uses the orange or blue colored o-ring and the cars use the brown/black one.

I also found out that Melling recommends the Black O ring for the straight tube pick up. I dont know if that could have been the problem or not. I read that the black is direct replacement for the OEM blue O ring.
Sounds like you did it right. Did you happen to take a dial caliper and make sure the tube isn't tapered? I saw someone calling a tapered tube straight the other day, and not that I think you're a tard, just curious if you're 100% it's the straight tube.

My issue year ago was the cam retainer plate, the little gasket on it was blown out. wasn't making a good seal. Oil pressure was at 20psi all day long.... hot or cold.

Thanks that's good to know. Only thing is, mines at 20 psi and went to 5psi fully warmed up.

I'm ready to install the new 10296 melling. Most people say to run the low pressure blue spring ON A STOCK ENGINE. My engine is a rebuilt L92 short block (stock internals)....i have no clue on the bearing clearances...do I go with the blue or red spring???....red is currently installed in the pump.
