862 heads any good?

862 heads any good? My friend has a pair of 862 heads in good shape for a good price. Just wanna know if I'll benifit from them at all from stock ls1 heads. I have a mild cam 218/227 long tubes and a lid plan on doing heads and a LS6 intake. I know 243's are good but didn't know if 862's are any good when they're right in front of me
They won't flow as good as 243 but you'll have better compression vs 243.
You can have them ported for a reasonable price and have a good valve job done on them to make them perform. They'll never be rock stars but they'll do fine with that cam

Planned on porting them probably. Would they be better then my stock heads? I think mine are 899 or something along those lines it's been awhile sense I looked. Would I pick up some hp?

if i recall correctly the difference in flow isnt a lot. and thats with the 862 having a 1.89 intake valve over your ls1 head having a 2.00 valve. i think they are worth the money. have a port job done and the 2.00in valve installed and you got a good flowing head and higher compression for cheap. thats just my .02 cents.

If it's a small-valve truck head they only do the Stage 2.5, which uses 2.02/1.57 valves in place of the small valves originally in those particular heads. This costs about $1000 instead of the $750 for Stage I because of the additional cost of the valves.

So many folks get caught up with keeping up with the Jones' that they fail to realize just how good and flexible the small-valve heads are by production and aftermarket standards.
It is the same nonsense that sold ported FAST intakes, NW throttle bodies, bullshit MAFs, SLP smooth bellows, KOOKS headers, Comp's whiney cams and rapidly worn trunions, top secret cam specs... and so on. This site propogates vendor bias - but folks are waking up.
A sensible build around stock, or reworked stock parts, with a nice cam and affordable supporting mods - tuned and driven well - will be much more satisfying to the owner and their wallet. A fool and his money are easily separated.
If you have money to burn, or like carrying debt, keep buying into the hype. Because entry-level performance parts now exist that perform well if used properly.

Might want to see if Katech is still running their CNC porting special for $500/pr. Just had em do set of 317s for a LQ9, they look GREAT. Haven't run em yet though. Left the stock size valves in em.
I couldn't agree more about the whole valve size hype thing. Seems like it's been proven time and again that the smallest valve that actually supports the flow of everything else, will win... that is, once the valve is no longer The Bottleneck, increasing its size actually HURTS.
