Default Broke into coolant jacket in exhaust port

So this happened today...

Is there anything I can do? Weld shop? Or get a new set of heads....?

That sucks. It could be welded up but prob at the same price as another head. I'd consider it good practice and grab another head.

I had that happen to a set of 862 heads, first time working with them.

Turns out ebay has 862 MLS heads for 320 shipped refurbished, and they take your old messed up heads as core in any condition. I needed to do the guides and valve seals anyways so this was perfect, sent them the broken one they didn't care

Same thing happened here, but on the intake side. It was welded up for $75. As long as the area is not paper thin, you’ll be ok. Just need some additional polishing of the area, afterward. 3 years now, everything works fine/no leaks.

Just curious, were you taking out very much material when it went through?

I'm assuming so, because it took only an errant moment & not enough light to clearly see into the runner. You can sense how close you might be by judging the arc of the work, to obtain the proper result, imo...if this makes sense to you.
I was careful to be "successful" on the first port, then made a small clay mold of that first port, where the speed bump was. In subsequent ports of the intake, I would slide in my clay mold, so that the proper shape would be obtained in all ports. This was not exact, I admit, but to my eye, a good result.

What you should have learned here is bigger isn’t better. These heads are really good to start out and only need moderate blending to make them shine. I’ve ruined heads myself back in the day. At least it’s only a 241. No biggie

Someone on these forums has said that a good bowl blend is 80%+/- of a good port job. I would not doubt that!

I wasnt really grinding the floor. I know that not a whole lot of gains are from the floor so I just barely touched on that.

what bothers me about this is what they do with them.

someone somewhere might be getting a set of heads with a aluminum weld tumor glob sticking into the water jacket.

Then I wouldn't bother. Just get another, cheap and plentiful.

So thats where two things come into play.

1. Ebay: buyer protection AND 10000+ sales 99% positive feedback
2. Proper inspection. L@@K at your refurbished heads and if there is any issue, you can send it right back at their expense.

In my case I asked specifically for MLS heads that hadn't had much if any material removed. They replied "yeah np" and I was a little worried because you know how sometimes they just agree without really knowing what you said... so I sent a followup making sure and the response was kinda like "yeah this isn't our first rodeo" so I just left it at that and got what I wanted

So you grinded the hump down on the roof of the exhaust port? At most you take the casting flash off the hump but you do not try to grind it down flush..
