Anytime you change pistons, rods, or crank, you should balance.

The actual answer is kind of complicated in that "if you measure the combination that came out and the combo going back in on each cylinder and they are the exact same you dont need to balance". Do you really want to do an engine rebuild and have a not smooth engine though?

DITTO.

OP: If you knew all the weights and such of the old hardware vs the new going in you would not need to balance the motor. No disrespect because nobody on here was born with any of the knowledge they have. It was acquired it through experience or through mistakes. With that said it would probably not be a bad idea to enlist the services of a good machinist and go from there. Factory parts aren't really that well balanced from the factory so having the rotating assembly balanced is actually a smart thing to do.

Default LS Engine Balance

HI ALL, the GM LS engine is balanced VERY WELL due to STRICT NHV requirements.

The engine is FINAL balanced (spinning) on the production line with running engine operation.

I was blessed with Instinct, engine instinct (Grandfather's engine Patent 1930 circa)

SO I ask "Tiger" will you "zero" balance OR 1%-2% overbalance ?

Man, I really don't know I'm just going take it up to my machine shop and see if we can make it work. My engine build budget kinda got hacked up having to get a new a/c unit at the house.

The last time I checked, I think the difference in bobweight was over 50 grams, but most of that was the difference between the Gen 3 and Gen 4 rods. Regardless, I would suggest you have the crank balanced.

Always a good idea to confirm it's good and never assume.
