‘Nothing wrong with it at all. That’s the way I’ve always done it. Rear cover, I use the crank to center the seal.
I simply make sure the cover is level...again level...at the pan rails.

so you're agreeing with the first video saying the tolerance for the pan to cover(s) must be no more than .50 mm as the first video states?

ive also never done this before obviously, but the benefit i can see with using the tool vs the balancer is that you can visually inspect the front seal after torquing the cover to see how it looks. again, you could just pull the balancer back off but who feels like touching that more than you have too

Had to back and watch the first video. I’ve never measured my tolerances there at the pan rails. I’ve simply always just made sure that the front and rear covers are square and level with the pan rails on each side. This is not rocket science. Make sure that your front and rear covers are torqued, before you do the pan install, or the pan bolts will pull the covers toward it, and move the seal away from center, even if the balancer is in place.
Im not sure why you’d want to visually inspect the seal after torquing the cover, concerning your tool comment. The seal is not gonna get hurt by the balancer install, unless the balancer is torn up, or pitted badly.

Honestly if you got the extra cash sure go for it if not dont worry about it, i done my first cam swap when i was 17 on my 00z28 daily driver i did it in my dads dirt floor barn in December with a kerosene heater a Walmart Stanley tool kit and a couple of auto zone borrowers and a ls1howto i changed the oil pump timing chain ect as well i just dropped the front of the oil pan then used rtv to seal it back up, put a new seal in the timing cover with a couple 2x4 wood piece and lined it up by eye, rtv on the valve covers when i changed springs, no special tools or anything, that was 11 years ago and i still have the car it has 174,800 miles on it and to this day still dosen't leak a drop of oil anywhere, mind you that was only the front cover but still you get my point, fast forward to today ive learned ALOT since then got a lot of tools and a garage since then and wouldn't do half the crap i did then lol and i have been very precise on my 408 t6 s480 build but i still dont have any of those tools. Maybe I was just lucky idk but i still smile and laugh when i think about it when im out in the garage working on the other car.

tools are nice, buy them then sell them for half of what you paid for......then we can all keep doing it for each other and we get free tools minus shipping and we can pat ourselves on the back for playing it safe.
