Default 862 upgrade?

So the plan was to do a 5.3 swap in my 67 camaro , all I was going to do was put a cam in and run it! Well I found water in a couple of cylinders, so I installed new flat top Pistons , a TSP 220r cam . I cannot find 243 or 799 heads and when I do they want big money right now! My question is it worth putting money into the 862 and having a 2 inch valve installed ? Or should I just run them ? Would I really gain that much ?

You should have NO trouble finding 243/799 heads as they come on nearly all Gen IV 5.3L truck engines, which are filling wrecking yards as we speak....
What year is the 5.3 you have?

When you go into a wrecking yard, look for 2007-up trucks w/5.3 engines. Most if not all heads on those trucks are 799/243. They should not be that expensive, as common as they are.

Those 862's will perform very close to the 799/243 heads if they are completely worked over

There’s been testing done where the stock 862’s actually outperformed the 799/243 heads on a 5.3L.

very true. And gearhead4life has a great DIY porting thread where he put LS1 2.00” intakes in plus milling and 4.8 flat tops to get 11.3:1 in the 5.3 engine

Look for Bobby Stipkovic of Steel City Auto in Pittsburgh. He has a set of 799/243 heads cleaned and assembled for about $500.

Keep the stock 862 heads, they are better than the 243s in what your doing.
