I daily a 370/706 head combo and have for 2 years now.

12.5:1 compression, 93 octane and 22 degrees timing up top.

A very modest cam, -1 overlap. It’s very peppy.

87 octane is doable but the timing would have to be pulled back so much that it may not be feasible.

Check the front coolant crossover tube and see if the gaskets are leaking. Should be noticeable if they are as you’ll see coolant trails down the head.

Sweet! What cam you running? Got any dyno numbers or ET’s? What’s it in?

I just scooped a JFR 218/218 cam and I plan to bowl blend my 862’s before installing them on the LQ4. Was gonna run it with a 4 speed in my 72 Nova but may be changing direction and not totally sure what to stuff it in. This has been a very informative thread, thanks to all who shared their combos! I will definitely share some numbers when it’s all said and done.

Sounds like a stout combo!

I have a homemade iron LS3 376 with stock #853 on it at about 11.1:1 with an even milder -15 overlap cam. It loves 93 but ive actually ran 22 degrees commanded on 87 up high at Wot with no problems so I see your success and I have like two extra sets of 706 hell they are probably worth it stock on my milder setup I just need to get some track numbers and a good dyno of it first and go from there I guess

I turned my truck into a towpig. I got it off the ground, put it back to stock, then went 4.5in up on 34s, E-rated tires.

It still pops off really good. I have a 212/218 cam in the garage, I think it's -7 overlap. I'm uncertain if the additional underlap would make enough difference to warrant swapping cams.
