799 head swap parts advice
So I'm on a tight budget, and I'm doing a 799 head swap on my 2004 GTO sourced LS1.
After seeing the cost of the ARP head stud kit, I'm leaning towards new Mahle head bolts for 1/10th the price.
However, I'm given the option of 1st design vs 2nd design. I searched around a bit and can't find a clear answer on which I need.
Also, I was wondering about head gaskets. Are OEM gaskets MLS?
Which gaskets do ya'll recommend?
This is a road race car, so I need something solid, but I don't want to drop hundreds of dollars on them if I don't need to.

Difference between 1st design and 2nd design is length of bolts, 1st design has some shorter bolts 2nd design is all
same length. The difference is in the block, head style doesn't matter.
you can get both style head gaskets from oem, older are the graphite style, newer are mls
if both surfaces are perfect you can use mls, if your deck or head surface is less than stellar
i would use the graphite style. Thats just my .02

So how do I tell if I have 1st design or 2nd design? Do I just have to wait until I pull the head bolts out to see? I prefer to order the hardware first.
I'm currently running an OEM MLS, so I guess I'll stick with that.

If you have 799 heads they are the late(2nd) design. All head bolts the same length except for the one row of small ones of course...

Oh really? He clearly stated he didn't want the STUD kit due to price - well the bolt kit is 1/3rd the price and is still ARP quality. You seem to have taken an interest in everything I say - maybe if you actually had some reading and comprehension skills you wouldn't need further explanation.

Oh really. He was more interested in paying even less than that required for ARP bolts. I only have interest in those who go around here with a giant chip on their shoulder and are defensive (AND offensive!) in everything they say. My reading and comp skills are fine. Your smartass skills go thru the roof, however. Blowhards just seem to attract my attention...

Unless you are going with a power adder the GM bolts and MLS gasket will be just fine. Once you start running over 8 PSI or 200 shot then maybe ARP bolts. Studs only if you are doing some serious racing.
