Default LQ9 build help

Hi, so I’m looking at upgrading my build in my LQ9.
heres current specs: 2006 Silverado 2500HD
2005 6.0 LQ9 ~ 450hp crank 400whp
  • Trick Flow 30602003 Cam - 228/230, .585 lift, 112 LSA
  • Trick Flow 21407400 Chromoly Pushrods - 7.4in x 5/16
  • Comp 26918-16 Valve Springs - 372lb/in, up to 8000 rpm
  • Stock 317 heads
  • 80mm BBK Throttle body
  • 36# fuel injectors
  • walbro 455 pump
  • Volant cold air intake
  • Pacesetter long tube headers 1 3/4
  • borla proxs true dual muffler
  • dual electric cutouts
  • ngk performance wires
  • Maybe some more smalls I can’t think of
My goal is to get it to 500 whp
i plan on doing this by:
- a new large low end cam for torque
- a 3600 yank stall converter
- removing clutch fan and going electrics
- new heads

now for your input, I can’t decide what actual cam to go with and what heads. I’ll swap the springs to the new heads either way. I do not care about drive ability, it is my summer cruiser, it will not be trailering ever.

I have a set of 243 heads but one needs a valve, should I just buy new heads online? Or have these fixed up? And what size cam ? Thanks!

500 whp is going to be tough. Problem is a smaller cam for torque will cost you up top. I would keep the cam you have. Ported and milled 243's might get you 50 hp. More like 30. Biggest restriction you have is the intake manifold. Budget swap a NBSS/TBSS intake with a stock 87 mm TB and you are looking at 20 hp. If you are wanting 500 whp you are probably going to need an LSXRT with a matching 102 mm TB, and some high end cathedral port heads. Even then I think you might be shy but you will have a beast.

Start off with heads and intake. You're going to be replacing those either way.

Smaller chamber heads, 243s should be OK. Get them CNC ported. PRC, Thompson, etc.
Swap to a gen 4 truck intake at a minimum with a 90 or 102 throttle body.

BOOST is gonna be the best way in a heavy truck
Otherwise to get 500rwhp your gonna need compression and heads/cam too large to make much low end torque
If you had say stock size tires a loose converter with some 4.56's or 4.88's and could care less about fuel mileage/towing then go for it!

Okay what specs should I get the 243 heads done to?
Also I thought the gen 3 truck intake breathed well enough or as close to a tbss intake?

It’s my weekend cruiser I just want it to go a little
faster, I have 33’s on it but plan on going back down to 31’s and lowering it 2-3 inches all around. I’m mostly confused on the fact If I should get work done to the 243 heads or buy new heads

Its just never gonna be that FAST without boost especially since you want a low end truck cam (witch I agree with)
If your still running the stock converter and gears with 33" tires im sure its a complete turd.
Maybe look into that first before tearing the motor down

Not even close. The TBSS flows much better and has an 87 mm TB vs the gen3 78 mm. You will get 10+ hp and 15+ lb-ft with just the TBSS intake/TB. Neither will get you to 500 whp though. You really do need a high end aftermarket intake and 92+ mm TB for that. Just make sure that it isn't a peaky one and lacks low end. Here is a great comparo article.

https://www.hotrod.com/articles/20-l...ifolds-tested/

A high end port and bigger valves from TEA, Texas Speed or any other good vendor will put you close to 500hp.

would these be a good setup to gain more horsepower instead of porting and polishing the 243’s?

I found a TBSS intake I’m going to go pickup tonight at Great Lakes dragway.

Save some coin and use yours. https://www.texas-speed.com/p-1172-p...-castings.aspx

Just be aware your probably won't be pushing 500 whp with a TBSS and stage 2.5 heads. More like low 400s. Still a solid improvement.

Maybe if you buy a bolt-on kit with everything.

My most expensive turbo setup to date is $1800.

I’ve never turboed a vehicle and don’t feel like changing my exhaust setup.
So far I’m looking at:
- sending my 243 heads in, either to a local place called late model throttle, or to Texas speed if they answer me back.
- I’m getting a TBSS intake
- just bought roller rockers with a trunion kit
- still in search for a 90mm or so TB
- won’t be ordering the stall converter till next week or so.

Late model throttle wants $1400 to port mill polish my 243 heads and install new valves in them. Think that’s reasonable or too much?

Just know your not gonna get 500rwhp.
I would use TSP because of there reputation, no idea who the other place is but that doesn’t mean there bad.
the stall will drop your Rwhp on the duno about the same amount the heads will improve it, but will be MUCH quicker
what gears are in the rear?

It has 4.10 stock gear ratio, I’m not crazy about what Dyno number crap it makes more care about how it feels on the street, I take it to our local Milwaukee street races (its and underground setup) and I’m sick of getting **** on by stupid civics 😂

Call Thompson. They have reasonable prices on CNC ported heads.

Good luck, 7,000lb truck with 500hp will be about the same as a 2200lb honda with 150hp
change cam swap on a turbo and beef up the fuel system.
Maybe you will have a fighting chance against some of them
