OK, I think I'm ready.... LQ4 Project
My proposed build, using the “KISS” method:
Vehicle: 1998-2004 Chevy S-10 Reg. cab, Short box, RWD, about 3,000 lb.
Remove total drivetrain, ABS, everything else not needed.
Ford 9” bolt-in “crate” rear end from Currie or Moser w/ disc brakes (3.70 or 3.90 ratio) Using a three link “ladder bar” setup
Upgraded front spindles, larger disc brakes
Six (or eight)-point cage to stiffen things up
Trans: TH400 trans. w/ 2,800 OR 3,000 (?) stall converter
Engine: 2004 LQ4 6.0 (actually a “late” 2003 (uneven head bolts)) short block w/ 18k miles
Heads: Newer ‘243’ heads w/fresh valve job and a minimal “shave” to assure flatness
12589227 LQ4 Head Gasket
Valve Stem Seals (Fel-Pro SS71039)
The LQ4’s rockers w/CHE trunnion upgrade kit
Cam – Will be mostly street driven so I want a broad power range. I’m leaning toward either:
Comp Cams:54-426-11, XFI RPM High Lift CamshaftHydraulic Roller Tappet, Advertised Duration 275/277, Lift .566/.568
Lifters, Hydraulic Roller, Chevy, Set of 16
Push rods, 7455-16, Std Length GM Gen III/LS1/LS2/LS6, 5/16", 7.400", .080"
Valve Springs, Single, 1.055 in. Outside Diameter, 313 lbs./in
Valve Spring Retainers, Steel, 7 Degree, 1.055 in. Outside Dia, .640 in. Inside Dia.
Valve Locks, Machined, Hardened Steel, 7 Degree, 1-Groove, 8mm Valve Stem
OR –
WS6Store’s “ASA” (that comes with the PAC 1218 springs)With this cam, I shouldn’t have any PTV clearance problems, what with the LQ4’s “dished” pistons, Right??Retainers/Locks (PAC-R311-16 / PAC L8113-16) (these are the right ones?)
Ws6store: 12499225-x GM Performance GM Performance LS7 Lifters Bulk
Ws6store: 12595365 GM Performance LS2 Lifter Guide Trays (x4)
Ws6store: Manley LS Series Chromemoly Pushrods 7.400" Stock LS *SALE*
Ws6store: N-Motion HD Timing Set (LS1/LS2 Single Row) [7240C]
Trick Flow® Timing Chain Dampener, TFS-K30675600
LS6 Intake: 90mm TB? …..(will this fit a LS6 Intake)??
Ws6store 303608 FAST High Impedance 36 lb/hr Injectors
Bolts: ARP Head and Cam bolts
Exhaust: Probably a long tube header setup
I want this thing to be a 460+ (fw)horsepower, reliable, streetable, badass sounding, funmobile.Take a look and let me know where I’m screwing up. Any suggestions are welcome.
???’s recap:
What size TB am I needing? Will it fit a LS6 Intake?
PTV clearance OK with the ASA cam?
PAC retainers & locks correct for the 1218 springs?
TH400 stall speed?
AND, final question: who have you had re-program your factory ECU and/or supply or redo your factory cabling?
I know, this is a “load”, so Thanks…

I would get the WS6 store cam not just for the better cam but for the support you’ll get from them. They’ll help you piece together all of the proper ingredients to make sure your engine does exactly what you’re expecting of it.
