So if I just got the intake and injectors/ fuel rail... I could get an 87mm 4 bolt that will work without the x-link?

Nope. You will need an xlink .The one I have is for a silver blade 90mm ls3 TB.

If you can mount the older style throttle body to it why would you need x link? Or am I missing something?

The issue is that the older 3 bolt throttle body is 78mm and would require an adapter to be used to fit the 4 bolt flange. However it will not require an x link and connect to the ecu. The 4 bolt throttle body can use an 87mm truck, 90mm LS3, 92mm LS, or 102mm throttle body and offers a lot more airflow, but requires the xlink to connect to the ecu. If you were running under 300 hp then the 78mm can support it. From 300-500 hp you will want an 87mm. Above that you need 102mm.

i see
i just looked up a x link and for around $50 that’s not bad, I would just get a whole intake with throttle body, injectors, rails from a salvage yard and run the x link then
