Got my 8706 yesterday. My block and heads go to the machine shop next week to be cleaned and checked before I slap it back together. I can’t wait. And thanks for the hat! It’s been a minute since I got a new Summit hat.

A lot of that boils down to what you're doing with it and the behavior you're looking for. Can you give us some ideas on that, the vehicle and the drivetrain combination?

Maybe if I choose a cam for another build it will help someone else better choose theirs. I mentioned before that I have a completely stock 2004 L59 suburban 4x4 blessed with GT5 and G80 on stock size tires and that I'm thinking about putting my BTR stage III truck cam in its otherwise stock 706 headed 5.3 because I just bought an 8714 from summit for my LS1 Z and want to try the BTR cam in something else. That's a 218/224 113+3. I would do at least a trailblazer stall at the same time with that cam even with my 4.10's in my heavy suburban if I do end up trying it.

Summit, would I be better off with your stage 1 Hi lift truck swap cam and no bigger than a trailblazer converter in my heavy suburban? I also have a comp cams 212/218 115lsa (pn#54-424-11) I can try. All I care about is 1/4 miles et's with this suburban it doesn't have to have a super choppy idle if it isn't necessary for performance but it will add long tube headers and x pipe with free flowing mufflers with duals out the back like a proper muscle truck should to maximize tourqe. My transmission guy can probably let my little 1500 4x4 spec 4L60e shift as high as it needs too if that helps et's, I shift the little BTR cam at 6800 off the first bounce of the rev limiter in my Z28 so I don't see why we can't do that with it in the burban (or higher if needed!) even though the factory tach only goes to 6k

Engine will be stock bottom end with cam, lifters, trays and reunion bushing. My plan is to use a T56. Vehicle wise I’m not sure yet. Could be a foxbody or a Gen 3 Camaro.

Get it running and driving reliably with the stock components first Or Your going to have a lot of extra headaches. You don't just get a cam for a engine (do you even have it yet?) and your dream transmission that you don't have just setting there with an unknown destination lol

Spend your money on getting it moving and plated first, see how it goes and then you can worry about upgrading the valve timing. Just my humble opinion. Take it or leave it

I do in fact have the engine and it was running before I pulled it. All builds start somewhere, and I don’t think it’s bad to know what I want to buy for it. I may not have the transmission or vehicle for it right now but it’s not for a lack of looking. Obviously I’m not just getting a cam, I’m researching specs and looking into which would be a better cam to buy, hence why I asked instead of just buying one.

If you want to build a car around a camshaft that is fine, though the most logical thing to do would be to build the car first and then see what kind of cam it needs.

Hey G thanks for stopping by. Tell me, what do you think about the asymmetrical .545 liftish lobes on my new 8714? I really do believe summit that it's the meanest truck cam, I hope they don't break my heart. will it gain 60ft and up over my BTR stage III do you think? Is a couple tenths all the way down too much to dream about?

Hey no sweat man! I'm not really up on a lot of the new cam science except to say they have come a long way, and that Summit has gotten the right guys to do their cams for them. Look around, ask a lot of questions of the guys who know, and listen to the answers. That's the best I can do. Shoot some questions to Summit themselves, as they sell other cams too, and aren't afraid of the truth.

I'm super pumped to try this 8714 in my otherwise stock, blue sprung 5.7 Ls1 with stock ls6 intake and pacesetter 1-3/4" long tubes. If summit has a better cam for what I want (Max et's with a/c and ls6 springs) that will drop in and work with my setup maybe they would exchange cams with me, as I have to wait a bit to install it anyway, But I think I made a pretty good choice with the 226/230 112+4. I'm Sure it won't be too radical at im guessing about a 850-900 target idle with my cutout closed to a magnaflow 12267 muffler and stock black rectangle Z28 spouts.

I've finally gotten finished installing and tuning that new summit 8714 in the LS1 in my 2002 Z28 A4. The car sounds a lot meaner now and pulls even harder above 4k rpm than it did before. I look forward to seeing gains at the track as well!

That's great! Your case was pretty unique.

Yes I drag race and deliver pizza part time with this setup! It's the best compromise of power and reliability I think!

Good stuff, when you get a chance...please write a review...make sure you mention the pizza delivery part and a time slip! Maybe even a picture of it leaving with the delivery sign strapped to the top of the car!

Any idea of power gains? Get it on the dyno at all before/after tuning?

Guys my setup already runs high elevens (I have a thread about low lift truck cams in the ll second club) I simply swapped out my cams, BTR stage III truck for the summit 8714. I will get into more detail when I update that thread once I get some track results. I can tell you already that the idle is much louder and meaner and that the car feels stronger at high rpm which is exactly what I wanted to take advantage of my tci 242932 and 3.73 gears.

I'm Sure I have one of the quickest licensed and legal naturaly aspirated pizza delivery vehicles on the road, summit please help me organize a fair race and then give me an awesome prize when I win it lol, I have a blast delivering for Papa John's in my Z28 even when we have a St Louis snow, it never misses a beat!

Nice work! Can't wait to see you run it! We're not sure what the second fastest pizza delivery vehicle is, but we'll try to find out!
