Default Camshaft questions

Ive been a long time lurker here under the username KingTA. Could not remember or change password so i created a new username. Long story short back in 2014 I had a LS1 built for my wife's trans am. I purchased the motor used, replaced the block with a new GM block, new crank pistons etc. When i purchased the block it did have Mallett heads but other than that I am not sure what was done to the heads. The cam that was installed was a COMP 54-601-11.

This engine is now installed in a 1980 trans am with a 700R4 and stock gears. I am curious what are your thoughts on that camshaft for this engine. To me the motor has never run correctly and just sounds "off" to me. I have owned multiple other LS cars in the past and this engine just doesnt pull or sound correct. We had the car dyno tuned and it put down 362 HP and 351 torque. If this is the wrong camshaft, what would be a good choice for a choppy idle but good drivability for the wife.

Ya that's not the cam I'd run at all. I'd look into a cam in the 224/228 112+4 or a 228/232 114+4 with .630 lift or so. It will drive better and pull harder. I'd look into gears and converter as well for increased power delivery and driveability. If you want to maintain stock gears and converter I'd go with an aggressive tow/truck cam from BTR or something similar.

That cam you have now is not designed for a DD application, more of a street rod weekend warrior that wants to make noise at the local car meet.

For the numbers and line of the cam, it is a cam made to SOUND (relatively good performance but aggressive sound)

I would leave it. Why waste more money. There are better cams that would perform the same without that agressive mean sound and much better idle.

I think the original cam is very poor also. Something like the Cam Motion Titan 4 227/232 113*+4*,
or Titan 3 224*/228* 113*+4* for something a little milder would be a much better choice for your goals and application imo.
The sound, chop or lope comes from an excellant tune with a low idle speed ~650 RPM.
Not an expert obviously, just my .02.

That cam has way too much overlap (16 degrees) for a small cube engine. It might be ok in a 400+ CID stroker engine, but it's not going to be very street friendly. I would go with one of the cams mentioned above.

Did you put this same answer in a 6-year old thread by mistake?

My cam has 21 degrees overlap, and it drives excellent...... but it has a carb and has a 4000 stall so it never sees low RPM except at idle...

What stall is in the car?

with that being said I dont know your wife, but mine wouldnt dare drive it! lol

That cam is more designed for square port heads that come on the LS3. I am always in favor of a smaller cam for a car you are going to drive. I have a 222/226 115+3 in a 5.3 and it has a nice chop at idle and i can drive around in 5th gear on my 5 speed at 1200 rpms with no bucking.
