Default Help picking cam for lm7

I’ve got an 01 Silverado 5.3/60e and I’m wanting a nice daily driver cam. I’ve been recommended the stage 2 TSP highlift cam 212/218 .600”/.600” 112lsa and they claim it can be ran with stock converter. Does anyone have any experience with this cam? Wanting something with a somewhat choppy idle and of course some power gains but still a good daily drivable cam. Thanks

That's a great cam for what you are wanting. Make sure and do a good intake, headers and exhaust to really wake the truck up and a 93 octane tune (and obviously run 93 octane) and you'll pick up a lot of power and be a real fun truck. A stall would go a long way too even a cheapo trailblazer stall will help a bit.

There's a ton of cam clips on youtube if you want to hear how a cam sounds

If youre going high lift, you may need need taller valve covers, a good driveable and tuneable cam for a 5.3 is the Comp 265 with 212/218 522/529 AND A 114 LSA..good luck!
Cheers, Dave

Will not need taller valve covers

The comp cam is similar to the TSP. In engine dyno over lays the higher lift 600 lift cam produces more power everywhere than the lower lift so higher lift is a much better choice unless you for some reason want to run OE valve springs.

The kit from TSP comes with push rods and valve springs. Will I need to go further with upgrading the valve train?

No don't have to. Rocker trunion is recommended but not necessary.

No taller VCs... thats a good one to know..theres a ton of youtube videos with guys running Silverados with that TSP setup youre talking about and they always have such a nice lope and deep tone with the right exhaust..PooterSS, do you know the limit for the stock valve covers as far as lift goes on the LM7, I wouldve rather have saved 200 bucks on my Holley VCs and kept stock but I was told by a couple people(and of course I listened lol) I might have VC interference if I went with a cam higher lift than what I have, so I just bought them to be safe in the future...

Valve cover and head modifications are needed with aftermarket rocker arms that don't clear. The OE rockers clear with any lift you throw at them that I'm aware of. In all my years I've never hear or seen anyone need tall valve covers for high lift. I've built, driven, and been around many LS motors with big duration .63x lift cams with stock valve covers on them.

I see what you mean, I went and looked at a pair of LS1 heads I have in the shop and the rockers are nice and deep in the head, so it makes sense theres plenty of clearance..another lesson learned on LS1 tech lol..

and another one is dont listen to people who want to see you drop your money on big shiny valve covers that just take up much needed space in an f body engine compartment!
