Well I can't go to the track yet to run it with the 799 heads and stage 1 cam, so I have a photo of my 2001 Camaro Z28 with convertible top

Interesting build simply because it looks like you tried to keep the engine bay in stock appearance.

I'm probably going up keep the stock TB and intake but will go H/C and a stall. The only visual modded giveaway besides the exhaust note would be headers and crank shaft pulley.

It would be awesome to have the strips open up sooner but we're coming up on hot summer temps which won't be favorable for low ET's. Fall would be optimal to hit the track if they figure out this virus crap.

Yeah my Camaro appears stock but has a lot more low end and mid range power with the small upgrade in cam specs. Yeah it's already warming up here in Southern California, so I'll have to wait until the fall to run good times at the track. What heads are you going to go with?

Man the absolute best thing to make that car accelerate faster will be a stall converter and that's 50 state legal because nobody will ever know it's there.

I had bolt on's only and a 3800 stall running 7.6's in the 1/8th. The car was full weight with a stereo system in it. It wasn't lightened in any way. It was actually weighed down.

I ran a Yank SS3800

Well I have a pair of 243s that I'm going to install once it cools down. I improved my head porting skill and opened the intake to 87.5% and the exhaust to 85% to get more flow. I have thought about a stall, headers, gears, but I know how to mod the engine without to much trouble so I've stuck with the stuff I know.

just because a photo from the '90s I think it set my brother back $1200 back in the early part of the decade

I don't see much posted in the way of exhaust so here are a couple pics of the exhaust work on my 243 heads. It's about to get busy at work so I might not be able to wait until the weather cools down. I might just have to go ahead and start taking stuff apart within the next few days and then swap heads again.

Irwindale is finally open for 2021 on Jan 30, so I should have a time slip to give me an idea of the difference I get with ported 243 heads.

Recap on my '01 Camaro:

it now has y-pipe, ported 243 heads and a small cam of 206 int, 212 exhaust.

Question has anyone used LS3 exhaust valves in 243 heads? The LS3 valves are 1.59 inches. I'm thinking of doing more work to my 243s to squeeze out some more power.

For the cam you have, the heads as-is should be plenty capable, especially since they are already ported. You have about as much cam as a stock LS6 (204/218,.550/.550, 117.5) except for the obscene LSA in the LS6. I would be looking at more cam if mo' powa' is the goal.

I looked into that when doing my last set of 243’s. Problem was cost. At least for GM valves.
So I didn’t do it.
Aftermarket 1.6” would likely be a better choice?
I/E ratio seems to be less of a concern these days because you can just change the exh lobes to make up the difference.
So as G mentioned, a slightly bigger cam would do the trick just fine.

I'm in Commiefornia so more cam will make it tough to pass smog. I have my 799s and a spare set of 243s to experiment on so I'm trying to get an idea if slightly larger exhaust valves would give better midrange power.

If your present heads are handling all your cam is throwing at them, more porting or bigger heads will add very little or nothing. Bigger ports will kill flow velocity with the present cam.
Being also in Commiefornia, I know the wall you are against.
I think the only legal way to more power for you is a larger engine with a power density similar to your 5.7.

You're probably right. I'm happy with the power it makes, but more is always nice. We don't even have a nearby 1/4 mile track as Fontana shutdown back in 2020, so the quickest my '01 ran was an 8.65 in the 1/8th mile at Irwindale; it's the only track I have nearby now.
