Can you tune a car with unknown cam specs?
I am considering buying a ‘99 SS from a seller that doesn’t know the details of the build of the car. The only reason I’m considering it is because it’s a really clean car with 54k miles for a very low price, and it runs fine now. The info that I am being given is that it has an aftermarket cam and milled 243 heads and *supposedly* made 490whp when the previous owner had it tuned. This was through the stock clutch and 10 bolt. I plan on addressing both of those. That said:
1.) Is this just a terrible idea in the first place?
2.) Would I be able to have it tuned without knowing the specifics of the cam specs or the heads (I’m assuming they had to have been ported too, and even then I’m skeptical of 490...)?
My plan is to buy it and pretty much take it straight to a trusted tuner that I know to ensure everything is in order with the tune and see what it actually makes. Any and all input is appreciated. TIA

^^^This...the only time I can think of that cam specs would be needed would be a mail order tune which is basically an educated guess at what the engine will want. Dyno or tune or street tune and a tuner will know what it wants regardless of the cam specs.
