Default Any reason to avoid a rebuilt 1997 LS1 short block

Hi everyone,

I am looking at purchasing a rebuilt 1997 LS1 short block (casting number 12550592). I have heard these had problems with their oiling system and with thin cylinder walls. The seller has a receipt showing it was only honed not bored and the stock pistons were reinstalled.

Let me know what what you think.

Thanks!

Personally, I would rather spend a little extra to get a non-built engine. It's worth the piece on mind not having to worry if the rebuild was done right. I would imagine there are some cheap stock ls1s out there.

If it was a high quality rebuild it should be good

If it was a low quality rebuild then it's junk

The best gauge of quality you get with a rebuilt engine is how much was spent on the rebuild.

I'm a mechanic of 20+ years. It never fails... the 500-1000 dollar rebuilds are all trash that I've experienced, the 2500+ dollar rebuilds are great. (this isn't if you did it yourself and saved on labor I'm talking about what the machine shop charged to do the whole job)
