Default Gen3 Ls1 burning oil

I have a 1998 ls 1 Gen. 3 that is burning lots of oil I need to know how to set up the PCV valve so it doesn't suck into the intake the oil from the engine I also need to know If the 2001 fuel filter with Built-in regulator is the best to go with because the engine now sits in a 2004 Mazda RX8 and I am trying to use the return line on the fuel system.

Can't help you on the regulator but the PCV issue can be helped with a oil catch can.

First off how do you know its PCV related? Pulled any plugs to see if its possibly isolated to a cylinder or cylinders? Catch cans are a great way to capture some of the oil before it gets into the intake. Basic LS1 style has one port on the driver side valve cover and two on the passenger one. A line is ran from the back connecting the rear ports on the valve covers and then ran down along the passenger side of the cylinder head and about 3-5 inches from the intake manifold hose a PCV valve is inserted into the line. You will want to mount your sealed catch can to this incoming line and out of the catch can through an inline PCV valve and then into the intake manifold. The other port on the passenger cover is connected to the port on the throttle body. If your throttle body does not have a port then connect it to the intake air tube or bellow.

Burning lots of oil means its cooking oil in the combustion chambers, a place where this should not happen so you either have a ring issue or an issue with the cylinder heads valve seals, valves or valve guides.

I've seen tons of them that pull oil into the intake thru the pcv system, Not saying this is his issue for sure but it doesn't mean it's bad rings or valve seals/guides in most cases, I guess it depends on what his idea of lots of oil is.

One last thing: The 01 Camaro's did not have the filter and FPR built in but the C5 Corvette did. No problem with running a C5 fuel filter regulator but I would install it closer to the engine rather than keeping it down by the fuel tank.

Excessive oil burning will be witnessed by examining the spark plugs. Wet oily spark plugs are one such indicator of too much oil getting into the combustion chamber and could very well be any number of those mentioned above.

Looking in the intake should tell him if it's a PCV issue, The place I used to work would get in 100's of engines a month and when it came to the LS based engine a good portion of them had quite a bit of oil film and some literally looked like they got an oil bath yet they ran fine.

I'd check the spark plugs as mentioned. If there's oil valve seals might be worth considering.

Once my 99 TA's oil consumption when from half a quart evey 1,500 miles to half a quart at each gas fill or about every 300 miles. It was a bad valve seal on #5 exhaust. After new valve seals oil consumption was back to half a quart evey 1,500 miles just like when the car was new.
