Default Junkyard lq9

I found a lq9 from a 04 escalade at the pick and pull and got it for 100$. I was gonna put on a set of 243's and truck intake from a gen 4 5.3. With a cam what sort of power would I be getting out of the motor and would this be a good street combo?

What vehicle is this going in?

Do you want it to drive good, or just make some kind of a "number"?

If it's going in a truck as it sounds like, a "Stage 3" truck cam would be about perfect. There's a few of em out there under different names; they're typically 216/220° duration, you can get em in lifts from .525" or so up to .600". TSP, CamMotion, Vinci, I know all have cams in that range.

Also a pretty heavy vehicle, though not quite like a truck. Same kind of cam will probably work quite well for it. 1 step up from that, the 220/224° sort of range, might also be OK if the car has a converter AND gears. Like, 3000 or higher, and 3.42 or higher. Otherwise the 216 neighborhood is probably where you need to be.

The '78 on up G-bodies are actually pretty light for their size

Good street cam for that would be https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-8707
Would make 500 at the crank with 243/706 heads and gen 4 intake and still drive really good.

Of course you can go bigger or smaller or whatever brand, like mentioned earlier you will defiantly want a stall, and longtube headers

An LQ9 with 243 heads is an Iron LS2. So anything you see for an LS2 should apply, build/power wise, plus car LS2s had a poor intake manifold (TBSS LS2s had the best one, on the other hand).

Depending on your cam, it would typically be 500-525hp at the crank or so for a basic setup. More if you have those heads touched up a little while off.

My lq4 with 241 heads, ls6 intake and a large custom grind cam made about 425hp 395 tq @6500rpm, to the wheels thru a t56 and 12 bolt. 01 Camaro ss full weight went 11.80 @119 with a 1.9 60ft. I would try to find a TBSS intake instead of the truck intake.

The TBSS intake was the predecessor of the 4.8L/.3L NBSS intakes.

I could be wrong but I think the only difference is where PCV tube connects on top.

Intakes matter only as you reach certain levels.

What level are you planning to reach?

Personally I think the truck intake would be fine, although a TBSS one might give you .0768 more horsepucker and 1.3145927565359 more torx.

Don't over-cam it, and you'll be fine. A 226° cam is probably too much. Although, some of the other cams in the Summit line would probably be just fine. Look for ones in that same 216 - 220° kind of range. Pretty sure they have one.

An engine works best when all the parts work TOGETHER toward the same goal. You're not going to revolutionize a stock LQ9 with a zebra dick cam. If you're gonna leave the heads as-is, you can only gain just so much from a cam, and then after that, the results start to go negative. Been tried, doesn't work. Best thing to do is choose a cam that works WITH the other parts of the motor, not AGAINST them.

He has a Gen 4 4.8/5.3 truck intake, witch has been confirmed to be pretty much identical to the TBSS

G-body is about the same weight as 4th gen f-body.
Anything that applies to f-body will bring similar results in G-body.
All depends on OP expectations.

You found a LQ9 for a $100 that in itself is impressive. I dropped $1,100 for mine lol

Look for a camshaft that closes the intake valve early to build a higher dynamic compression. This will help with low end torque in a heaver vehicle. There are a lot of online camshaft calculators making it easy to calculate dynamic compression and overlap between different grinds.
