04 chevy avalanche 5.3 ticking
This is not a ls question but it is in the ls family.
I'm not sure if this is gonna be allowed here - if I have gone against forum rules I apologise - please move or delete.
I just got a 04 chevy avalanche with 380k on the dash.
im not in the truck deep at all but it is currently my daily.
This truck makes no noises going down the road - iv done several wot pulls and part throttle pull - no ticking - rattling or pinging - sounds like new - other then a slight tapping that comes and goes at idle..... Again it comes and goes - sometimes slightly reving it makes is disappear.... To me it sounds like a lifter - however it sounds down lower to me but could be the way the engine sets in the truck..... This morning when I first fired it up - it wasn't there ( or noticeable )...... I let the truck warm up for 10 mins ( wasn't there ) when I left for work..... Drove 10 mins on highway. Got to work - when I parked it wasn't there but a few mins of idling and it slowly came back ( lil more noticable )....... Other then this - no smoke and no other noises.... Noise is also there in gear - cant hear it from inside cab - unless in a drive thru or such - when in the drive thru ( if you rev or slightly stall against the converter ) the noise goes away....

Parking lot diagnosis aka wild *** guess: Loose timing chain, collapsed lifter(s), oil pump failing, bent pushrod, or valvetrain falling apart.
Questions:
How's the oil pressure and how long have you been driving it like this?
What does your oil look like and when was the last change?
Have you cut the filter open recently to look for metal?

Valvetrain issue..
I wouldn't keep spinning it up there but if you'll take a garden hose you can listen and isolate what rocker arm is making the noise. Inspect the rocker arms for excessive play and inspect the pushrod for signs of wear. You may be able to replace one or the other, maybe both and get some more life out of it.
