Default Small cam suggestions DD

I'm trying to come up with a good combo for my car.

Goal is to have a nice daily driver / weekend cruiser. I was talking to Joe from Summit and he recommends the Summit stage 1 Ghost Cam (8715) or Stage 2 cam ( 8707). Both of these look pretty good and I'm leaning heavily towards the smaller stage 1. I wanted to see if there was any other good options. I'd like to keep some good low end power because the car lives in the lower RPMs for the most part.

My car is a 1970 GM A-body (Pontiac Tempest)
LQ4, stock now but putting 706/862 heads on when I do the cam.
27" tire
3.55 rear
4l60 stock 04 gto stall around 1800? but planning on doing VJCX Trailblazer converter - stall 2400-2600 soon

By your description of use, desired results, and combination, consider the 8720. Would work with either stall, and the pull pretty hard down low.

Sounds like you want something like the "Stage 3" truck cam. 216°/220° @ .050" kind of range. Something similar to this. TSP Stage 3 High Lift 5.3 Truck Camshaft (texas-speed.com) Very popular among the truck people w 6.0 who need to move around big heavy vehicles with inadequate gearing. Among the Summit cams the 8720 is the closest to that range, would also be a good choice, as said.

You don't think that would be too big? Car weighs about 3700lbs with 3.55 gears

That Texas speed one has the least amount of area of the 4 cams suggested. The summit 8720 is very close to the TSP one suggested.

The most aggressive one is the 8707

Best advice you can get is from a cam specialist such as Martin Smallwood for a example. Its more to a cam than just duration and lift...

Go with something like Comp Cams 54-412-11 212/218 for the strong low end and idle quality.

No because that's a stage 3 cam for a 5.3, with 9.5:1 compression

You're doing a considerably larger motor with more compression which will easily tolerate more cam. You're also doing a converter, again tolerates more cam.

So that makes it a lot more like a stage 1 cam for you.

I would completely skip the trailblazer converter though. I'd do a high quality converter, with at least a 3k stall speed personally.

You also asked for low end, higher stall speed converters have higher stall torque ratio, which hits the tires harder and offers more torque multiplication down low during the stall slip.. But if you don't want any stall "feel" I'd go for a high quality 2800-3000 stall, and a truck cam with tight LSA.

If you want a **** load of fun and to go fast, go with a 3400+ stall, preferably 3600 or higher, a little more cam, and invest in some good tires.

I have the TSP 216/220 .600/.600 in my LS1 5.7 along with ported 241 heads, CAI, stock LS6 manifold and short headers/ twin 2.5" exhaust inc cats. Car weighs just over 3700 pounds with me in it. Gears are 3.9s but the car is a 6 speed manual. This is a great cam in my opinion. Very smooth with a quiet valvetrain. The car has good low end, is responsive and revs nicely to 7000 rpm. Its hard to convert dyno results between countries (I am in Australia) but it would be over 400RWHP in the USA.

However, in a 6 litre, I would imagine you could go even bigger again for daily duties as the extra capacity offers better low down performance already. People did that over here, the 6 litres always use bigger cams than the 5.7s due to more cubes and the better heads. Still, I would be surprised if you didnt like the TSP 216/220 .600/.600 112 as a daily.
