Default Oil around intake ports

Does this mean I need a oil catch can?

I think that is simply condensed oil vapor being pulled through the engine by the Positive Crankcase Ventilation system. I don't run a catch can on my 5.3 engine.

I figured that's what it was. I didn't know if a catch can would be beneficial. The plugs don't foul and it doesn't burn oil.

Sealed can will help to keep some of it from going back into the intake manifold.

How does the air get into the combustion chambers to mix with the injected fuel? Intake manifold.

What happens when you use the intake manifold to draw in air from the crankcase? You get the blow-by gases and the moisture from the heat of combustion mixing with the fresh air coming in from the air box.

What are the long term effects of this? Dirty/oily intake manifold, dirty intake and exhaust runners on the cylinder heads leading to coated valves.

Get the picture!

How does the inside of the intake itself look? Are you running an aftermarket cam?

I haven't checked in about a year. It was pretty oily in the intake when I cleaned the **** out of it previously. It's a stock LQ9 with stock cam.

Do you have any recommendations for a can or will any sealed can do? There are cheap ones on Amazon and I know they can go for over $100 other places

That doesn't look so bad but personally I would run a catch can anyways. No harm in doing so tbh

Oil on your valves is like running sand through them.. it will waste your valves and seats over time sharpening the valves like razors. Don't believe me research it for yourself. Anyone who doesn't run a catch can is a plain lazy fool

I've used the Norris catch can and it works. I'm sure there's cheaper ones out there but I like the design and if your going to run PCV then you should probably put one on.

You could also build a can. A lot of truck guys are doing that and they seem to hold up and work just fine

It's not rocket science. Basically it is a stopover to "drop the oil off" prior to getting sucked into the intake

Yes G, but like I said, there are some that are $30 and some that are $130. Whats the reason for that? Sorry Im not a catch can expert.

Good question. Unnecessary braided lines and anodized aluminum fittings for the detail-obsessed? Billet can? Go from there...
A $130 dollar puke can is mainly for those whose wallet far outshines their mental capacity. The $30 one, PROPERLY INSTALLED, will do the same job.
