Default Is this Ls1 engine noise normal?

Hey everyone, started noticing tapping/ticking noise from inside the car. You can distinctly hear tapping picking up once I increase the revs a little. I removed carpet and insulation recently so not sure if ls1's are inherently noisy like that and I just started noticing it now or it's indeed a valvetrain issue?

My car is a swapped BMW and the motor has about 103K miles on it. Compression and leak tests checked out.

Lol, it does sound terrible in the video, but hoping the specific tapping is clear enough and if anyone had that same experience

Could be piston slap, a video from the top of the engine outside the vehicle will help with the sound. I had a 5.3 Silverado that sounded like that but it had 342k miles on it. Some motor honey and a trade in and it was no longer my problem. My issue was a faint rod knock though. Oil pressure had gone down to 12-15 psi at idle from its normal 40 with 5-30.

Lets hear a clip from under the hood this time and move the phone from one cylinder head bank to the other.

Thanks, will do later today as soon as I get home.
Being inside the car seems to isolate some of the sounds like injectors and outside ambient noise

Here's the clip from outside on both sides of the engine. To be honest I don't hear anything suspicious when I'm right by the engine, it's only when I'm in the car.

Hard to say but it doesn't sound too terribly bad to me.

I think most of that noise is the intake sucking in air. Could be a pulley you hear inside.

I know your problem - Engine is in a BMW.

BMW's need special attention even with a good LS engine!!

I know I have BMW experience!!!

That’s nothing but the LS valve train noise. Seems everyone of them with cam change is at least that loud if not more so.

Half way there I suppose. There's hardly anything original left on that thing

I hope you are right. Not sure if the engine's been cammed before I got it. Based on the numbers it was putting down on a mild tune, 320 whp, I suspect not. In the future I want to replace lifters and rocker arms for a peace of mind though.

I have a manual transmission in my truck and the release bearing is going bad, although the clutch
is still operational. When the clutch pedal is depressed, I can hear the input shaft winding down to a
stop, but a ticking sound remains, i.e.; the transmission is not the problem. Air in the clutch hydraulics
will burn up a release bearing, they're not designed to be run constant.

I hear a little piston slap in the first video. I have a 2001 LS1 F body with 140K and it slaps like it's cool when cold.

That’s a 97 or 98. Those did have piston slap issues.
Fully warmed up in that last video?

At any rate, sounds like an LS to me.

My 2000 vette had piston slap so bad when cold my neighbors commented.

Both videos were taken with a cold start. When the motor is fully warmed up I don't notice the sound inside the car.

Would you guys recommend to open up the engine or is it ok to drive around still?

I beat on my LS1 for 8 years. Hundreds of 1/4 mile passes, 6800 rpm shifts etc.
Even managed a 10.99.
You will be fine I’m sure.

Drive it but keep up with the preventative maintenance. Don't be cheap when it comes to oil and filters either buy the good stuff!
