Default LQ9 cam suggestions

putting a lq9 with 317 heads in a jeep TJ. 4l60e with a yank truck thruster 3000 stall converter, 4:56 gears and gonna have a holley terminator x max for wiring and computer. already have a 5.3 with BTR stage 3 truck cam in it already. got a deal on the motor and a buddy is wanting the 5.3 for his s10 swap so it works out. not gonna be a hot rod, mainly a daily driver and i tow a boat with it during hunting season. was looking at the BTR truck norris cam. any recomendations on a cam that wont be a turd in overdrive towing a boat?

You can use that same BTR stage 3 truck cam in the LQ9 and run it with that. If that cam is too tame you can upgrade later.

How heavy is the boat and trailer. What diameter tires?

maybe its the tuning in the motor but when in overdrive with that cam its a turd unless im driving 70-75 where its running 21-2200 rpms and the boat and trailer setup only weighs about 2,000 lbs. without the boat behind it its not too bad. ive never ran it with a stock 5.3 to see if theres much difference on the low end. with the very very little knowledge i know of cams and what videos ive watched with richard holdener on youtube comparing all 3 stages of that cam it seems the stage 3 drops the most torque in those rpms even well below stock and thats the rpms i mostly drive in. my jeep barely ever even sees 5k rpm and thats mostly when im passing somebody and that seems to be where the stage 3 shines.

With what you are doing I would use a BTR Stage I or II which will keep more torque in the lower rev range.

For light to moderate part throttle torque, you don't want to run too much overlap. The BTR Weekend Warrior Stage 2 or Summit 8719R1 would be good choices.

I like the BTR stage 3 truck cam for the 6.0 liter. I say get a set of 241 heads or 243/799 heads to increase compression. You'll have about 10.5 to 1 with 241s and 10.9 to with a set of 243s which should give your better torque throughout the curve.

went with the btr truck norris cam and springs. im thinking of swapping a tbss intake/50lb injectors and 90mm throttle body thats works with the terminator kit and 706 heads. from the richard holdener videos for low end torque (which is what i want the most) the 706 heads seem to outshine the 243/799 and really a good upgrade over the 317's that are on it. rarely will it see 5500 plus. his videos are also on alot bigger cam than what im going with. only worried about compression with those heads and flat tops. 91 octane is regularly available. sound like a good daily driver?

There's reasons to be concerned then cause your in the neighborhood of 11:1 static with an LS9 head gasket and 706's. I'd still do the 799/243's or look to have the 317's milled.

the place im ordering the intake from comes with injectors in either 36lb 12613411 or 50lb 12613412. with that setup and 243 heads is there a need to go with the 50lb injectors over the 36?

36 is more than plenty for gasoline. No need for 50s unless you're wanting to run E85 or some such.

getting a set of 243 heads from a local machine shop and now im gotta get head gaskets and bolts. any reason not to stay with the gm genuine MLS gaskets in the same thickness 0.052 in or should i use the ls9 0.055 in thickness mentioned?

Do you need to lose compression? If not stick with the GM .052 MLS gaskets

Im on 33's and 4.10s so should be close to the same rpms you will love that cam.
