Default Engine identification: L96 or LQ4?

Thats the question... the engine was sold as L96 but when I look at the casting no 12551364 it should be a LQ4. Heads are 317 and look like cathedral ports for me.
Can someone confirm that it is the LQ4?

Reason is to identify and find a suitable manual gear. I have a T56 which doesn't fit. The bellhousing seems to be too small.

Many thanks guys!

317 heads are definitely cathedral ports.

The bellhousing is a separate piece, so that has no bearing on which engine this is, which IS an LQ4 or LQ9, strictly by having 317 heads.

L96 is a GENIV with rectangular port heads, 4 bolt 87mm throttle body, and the block casting should be 12576181.

Your picture shows an Intake, heads, 78nn throttle body, fuel rails are all from a GENIII. Probably also has the knock sensors in the valley cover too.

I haven’t educated myself in Gen3 “what’s what” but as I understand this, the Gen3 6liters with DBW were only in The Denali? I bought an ‘03 LQ4 that had DBW, and was told it came from a Denali. I didn’t care either way, as I only wanted the block and crank.
I bring this up because the engine in question here has DBW, so I’m curious.

2500 trucks and H2's had them as well. Only the Van's remained cable operated.

Depending on the year it could have an LQ4 or the LQ9.

Alright thx a lot guys, this is already sth that helps a lot.
As far as I learned from this forum, the difference between LQ4 and LQ9 are mainly the compr. rate by different pistons. Flat ones for LQ9 and dishes for LQ4. I will check on that.

That is exactly it. LQ4 pistons have 6.7cc dish, LQ9 pistons are flat, as you said above.
Also, the LQ4 used the LM7 cam (191/190, .456/.467, 114) until the LQ9 came out, then they shared the LQ9 cam (196/201, .467/.479, 116)

Great, many thanks for that. Curious to see what I exactly bought without any information for my project and how it will fit

Looks like an LQ4 from the flexplate.
