Default Ported stock oil pump vs melling

This is in reference to lsa/dod pumps, so volumes are the same.

Is there any difference to the melling pumps internally besides slightly smoother surfaces and orfices?

Looking at pics that’s all I can see, which makes me wonder if it’s worth it over just porting and smoothing the edges on a stocker.

I do realize there are some with stiffer relief springs, but again this is correctable by shimming a stock pump yes?

doesn’t seem worth the extra expense unless there is something else I can’t see from a picture.

If you have the choice, I would not shim a stock spring unless I knew a lot about it, if you coil-bind it then it may break.

Would be a new spring, and shimmed with the standard 1 washer trick, pretty far from bind. Just enough to bump the seat pressure.

If its my engine, I'd want the Melling. But-It's very easy to check for coil bind in the relief spring, which I've never experienced. Actually, I never knew it was a "thing." But, for those who want to check it, simply take a some sort of somewhat soft tool, like maybe a 5/16"-3/8" diameter wooden, or plastic dowel. You don't want to use a screwdriver, or a piece of metal, as you may burr up the bore, and cause the relief piston to hang up. Simply use a tool to push the piston just past the bleed off port/hole. Once its at that point, its as open as it will ever be. That's as far as the oil is going to push it. Then try to push it farther. If it moves another 1/16"-1/8", you'll be fine.....
