Default ARP Ultra-Torque lube on LM7 head bolts

I'm putting reworked 862's on my LM7 using ARP head bolts.

Per the directions, I coated the threads and under the bolt head and put them in initially finger tight. As I get close to having them finger tight, I hear a slight sound from some of the holes. Weird, right?

I pulled the bolt out and find some light gray fluid in the bottom of the hole.

I recleaned everything and reinstalled the bolt with a small amount of lube and the same thing happens. I coat the threads and wipe off any excess. I've done this on a few engines.

ARP tech support said to put alot on the threads and don't worry about any separating out fluid that resuts in the bottom of the bolt hole. I think the lube base carrier is what I saw.

How much lube is enough and am I concerned about nothing? Am I using too much? I don't feel there should be any residual fluid in the bolt hole.

Apologize for the wordiness!

You don't need to have a lot of lube on the threads - coat them so the peaks of the threads are visible and you should be fine.

Thanks. That's pretty much what I did.
I coated the entire threaded bolt area. Maybe that's not necessary.

As long as the bolt doesn't compress the fluid in the bottom of the hole it shouldn't be a issue,
If it was bottoming on the liquid tightening could generate some pretty high hydraulic pressure in the hole.

Thanks. In another part of the ARP site under FAQ, there's a note to use a small amount of their lube for blind holes.

If my time machine wasn't broken, I would probably have put lube on the bottom several threads only.

Thanks everyone.

overthinking ? placing the lube on the threads means as the bolt is tightened the lube will travel up the threads...that is the lube that is excess...so can you over lube ? not likely

def do NOT place the lube IN the bolt hole...that would give excess lube no way to escape

I'm pretty sure I'm overthinking! I did mean to put lube on the lower bolt holes.

Appreciate all the input.
